I have been looking for a kiwi activity book that is at a reasonable price to send to friends and family overseas. When I saw this book up for a review I was immediately keen to take a look as it covered my brief.
As a teacher I am very fussy about activity books and am always keen to make sure it has some learning as well as fun in it. My son and I sat down and looked at each page and talked about what he needed to do (he is not able to read yet so needed a bit of direction). He quickly got to completing a few pages talking about all the New Zealand things he could find.
I like how there is a variety of activities in this book, however the same sort of activity is repeated either once or twice. It is one of those books that can be used with a variety of ages. Mr 4 was happy to just colour one of the crossword pages as the pictures are so well drawn.
If I was disappointed in one things as a teacher I was not happy with was that of using capital letters. I know traditionally word finds use capital letters but when teaching kids it is always good to look at the lower case or at least have the words you are looking for in the same case as what is in the word find.
I love the price of this book and will be sending many a copy overseas as it is kiwi and would generate kiwi discussion.
We received this book in time for a very rainy weekend and much to my surprise all three of my girls sat down together and worked their way through the book together. Miss Eight took the lead and Miss Four and Miss Seven happily did each page with her. They liked the variety with the colouring in, word finders matching etc and there was enough of a range that there is enough in there to interest an age range.
I think if I was just to buy this for one child probably aged 7/8 years would be good as it helps for them to be able to read. Miss Four though was happy to do some of the activities under the direction of Miss Eight. The girls all enjoyed designing a New Zealand flag which was timely so we were able to have a discussion about flags and their meanings.
This activity book is a fun book and its nice to have books with a kiwi focus. With the school holidays coming up this is a good book to get for a road trip or a day indoors and at ten dollars the amount of time your child will be entertained by it makes it good value.
