The Whittakers New Zealand Artisan Collection of chocolates have been available for quite some time now, but I had yet to try them until recently when a new flavour was released which reminded me of my favourite (no longer available) chocolate from my childhood, being so pleased with the taste of this chocolate I decided to branch out and try some more flavours in the range including the Nelson Pear and Manuka Honey chocolate.
The first thing you will notice when buying this chocolate is the super fancy packaging, unlike normal Whittakers chocolate that comes in a plastic type packaging, the Artisan range goes more upper class being first wrapped in a lovely golden wrapper and then packaged into a very neat and tidy, well designed cardboard box type of package, which has a all over print of several New Zealand icons such as the Kiwi.
The Artisan chocolate blocks are a lot smaller than your average blocks of chocolate, and in saying that the chocolate is noticeably thinner too. However the taste of this Manuka Honey and Pear chocolate was absolutely divine, deliciously creamy Whittakers Milk Chocolate blended with a loving touch of Manuka honey, in just the right balance, add to this some Nelson Pear and you have a very special treat! The pear however I didn't really think tasted like pear, there were little fruit like chunks throughout the chocolate which obviously resembled the pear, however they were more like little tiny jelly lollies to me, I couldn't quite pick up on the flavour though I definitely wouldn't say it was tasting like pear, even Miss 3 was asking to have "more chocolate with the lollies in it".
I can imagine this chocolate going well in baking, making a nice additional flavour to a chocolate cake or cupcakes, however due to the size of the blcok this is something you could end up needing quite a lot of, so perhaps something I would only consider using for baking if I were to see it on sale sometime in the future.
Overall a quality product, using locally sourced New Zealand products which I think is great! I will certainly be buying this chocolate again, and can not wait to try some more flavours in the range!
Whittakers new Artisan collection is six brand new fancy, maybe a bit crazy sounding, flavour combinations made into blocks of Whittakers famous chocolate. Smaller in size than a standard choc block, and thinner also. But what these blocks of chocolate lack in size, they make up for in flavour!
I was given the whole set of Artisan chocolate blocks. 6 intriquing flavours to try out, maybe bake with. I had planned on baking. This never happened due to having a family of 5 and the blocks being as small as they were meant, I would have needed to have two of each flavour or combine flavours for the baking. So it didn't happen but certain flavours I will most definitely buy to bake with.
Nelson pear and manuka honey: my daughter loved it! Hubby said it was pretty good. My teenagers and myself, yeah um one spat it out and refused to eat it, the other smelt it and tried the smallest amount ever then said noway would he eat that again. Sadly I have to agree with them. The manuka honey is crazy over-bearing. don't get me wrong, I love honey, but this is to much. Way to much :( the chocolates supposed to have pear in it too, but all you can smell and taste is honey - no pear, no chocolate :( its all honey. This was to much for me.
Due to the over-whelming smell/taste of the honey, I had half a piece and then no more. This chocolate is not for me, and not something I would be again unfortunately.
