Begin Again product reviews

Begin Again is a soul-stirring comedy about what happens when lost souls meet and make beautiful music together.

Gretta (Knightley) and her long-time boyfriend Dave (Levine) are college sweethearts and song writing partners who decamp for New York when he lands a deal with a major label. But the trappings of his new-found fame soon tempt Dave to stray, and a reeling, lovelorn Gretta is left on her own. Her world takes a turn for the better when Dan (Ruffalo), a disgraced record-label exec, stumbles upon her performing on an East Village stage and is immediately captivated by her raw talent. From this chance encounter emerges an enchanting portrait of a mutually transformative collaboration, set to the soundtrack of a summer in New York City.

I wasn't a huge fan of this movie given that it got such good ratings on a quick google search I thought I would be. I quite like Keira Knightley and enjoy British movies and with the addition of Maroon 5's Adam Levine I thought I was quite set for a highly entertaining nights movie. However I found myself loosing interest quite quickly in the storyline and getting sick of all the singing.

For a movie claimed to be a comedy this is definitely more of a musical with the majority of the movie having singing throughout it. The majority of the music was written by Gregg Alexander of the New Radicals and it wasn't really my type of music but it was still pleasant enough to listen to for the short period of time the movie was on for. It was also great to see Adam Levine's performance and Keira Knightleys singing was actually surprisingly good having never known she could actually sing as well as act.

The movie follows Gretta (Knightley) she lives with her sweetheart Dave (Levine) except when he gets a record deal he cheats on her and she is left on her own. She then teams with a music producer (currently on a lowpoint of his career being fired from his job) who instantly recognises her talent and sees a hit album in the making and together they record an album on the streets of NY city.

We get to revisit Dave at the end of the film which was quite uplifting seeing Gretta realise that not only he has changed but she herself has changed and of course her music becomes an instant hit so it really is a feel good movie which makes a nice change in a movie.
