I have mixed feelings towards crafts, give me the opportunity to make an info-graphic or poster, or give me a kit for building Star Wars paper airplanes or Miniature lego models, I am all for it, therefore I found this to be a very exciting crafts project. It took me around 2 weeks to construct, in fact I finished it on the day I wrote this review, but it was well worth the time. I started with constructing the head dome, but it was crudely built, a bit tattered, and I couldn't get the eye done right, but it gave me the opportunity to learn what level of dexterity I needed in order to build the droid.

The paper was quite sturdy, and it stuck together with PVA easily, making the task of construction easier. I loved the level of detail that was put into designing the model, it went right down to having the cables attaching the feet to the power packs, and even the acoustic signaler, air vent, exhaust ports, charging ports, and polarity sinks, which were indented inside the body itself. Due to this detail, the level of realism was, I think, fantastic, which makes this a far more valuable work of art to have. The size of this thing is awesome, and I love how the designer managed to design it in such a way that the thickness of the card and the structure of the model made it stable, which means it does not have to be handled like it was made of tissue paper. LOL Icon

I also loved how the model was somewhat articulated, it's third leg is able to move in and out slightly, it's side legs are able to pivot, as well as the feet, also, the head was able to turn slightly as well, making the R2 model able to be placed in different poses. The additional feature of the head having LEDs and a speaker apparatus inside of it was genius, it gives a cool effect, and it can act as a surprise for any people looking at it who think it is made only of paper. This model will also make an excellent thing to have in the room if I follow through with my plan of hosting a Star Wars day celebration.

Make no mistake, this is a craft project not for the amateur hobbyist, as it took quite a bit of work to construct this, and anyone who does not have enough dexterity and care will have quite a bit of trouble constructing this, and the result would be quite a bit ugly. The book that came with this kit was quite informative, and will make anyone who has not watched Star Wars could become quite informed on R2's role in the story. Also, the book contained many extra little tidbits of information, such as a little more info on the other models of astromech droids, and the functions of R2 himself. I am very impressed with the quality of this model, but it would be fun if Scholastic also produced other kits, such as the other r-series astromechs, or perhaps C3-PO Smile Icon All in all, top scores for this product, and high recommendations.
