Clive and Martha have been together since they met at university; they have a young daughter, Eliza. Their marriage appears serene and content but when Eliza's adored new piano teacher turns out to be a woman from Clive and Martha's past, the enigmatic Eliot Fox, Clive becomes desperate to keep Eliot - and what she knows - away from his family.

Earlier this year I had to read this for the pre-release to New Zealand, I was given 6 weeks to do so and I really needed those 6 weeks. I actually dreaded picking up the book and it was such a mission to get through one chapter. I felt depressed and just gloomy reading this and had terrible sleep after a couple of pages.

There was not one character I could identify with and/or liked. Clive (the father and the main character) is a jealous, depressive guy who has no self-worth at all. Martha (the mother) is cold and only loves her horrible daughter. Eliza (daughter) aggggggh I have never wanted to hit a kid so much, she is spoilt, pathetic and so infuriating. Then there is Eliot who is the piano player from the past who befriends the daughter.

Its a dumb story, predictable in parts and really of no value to anyone to read it. Clive has an affair with his brothers so what called girlfriend she gets pregnant bla bla bla.

I prefer uplifting books or at least books I can identify with the characters or even a book where I liked the character. I can not stand jealous people or people who think they have terrible lives or just complacent lives. Why stay in a loveless marriage where both your daughter and wife hate you. Instead of worrying about what everyone else is doing, start improving yourself.

Really one of the worst books I have ever read and don't have anything nice to say about it except I am glad I have my life and this book makes me so much more appreciative of it.
