SoapNuts 100% Natural Detergent, Soap Nuts or Soap Berry, also sometimes referred to as Washing Nuts or Wash Berry are naturally grown and have amazing washing powers.
The shells of these nuts/berries contain a natural substance called Saponin. Once they come in contact with water they create mild suds similar to soap. This soapy substance has remarkable detergent abilities, easily replacing normal detergents. It works effectively by removing dirt and dissolving oils from clothes and other surfaces.

Suffering from eczema and having very sensitive skin I have to be really careful about what type of washing powder I use. I find it really hard to find anything that I don't react too so when I heard about soap nuts I decided to give them a try.
To begin with the price seemed a little on the steep side but I figured if it lead to less itching it was well worth it. However once I read the instructions more I discovered the nuts could be used more than once. I found that on average they could be reused 5 times. It meant the soap nuts worked out no more expensive than the washing powder I usually use, if anything they worked out to be better value for money.
The soap nuts are super simple to use place some nuts inside the cotton bag they come with and throw them in your wash. Working with children my clothes end up covered in all sorts including paint so I was a little worried that they wouldn't perform very well on my uniforms. I'm pleased to say though that they did a wonderful job at cleaning everything I threw in the wash, my uniform came out spotless.
The biggest test was when I wore the clothes after the first wash. Often I use new washing powder and end up itching all day! The soap nuts though caused no reaction and even after multiple uses I haven't reacted to them at all. After giving them a try it's safe to say I won't be going back to normal washing powders.
As a cloth nappy user I had heard about SoapNuts but was sceptical about using them, mainly because of the price. I was lucky enough to win a pack, I was all to happy to give it a go and was pleasantly surprised by the results.
The SoapNuts come with a small cotton bag that you place the SoapNuts inside and add to your wash. They can be used more than once, they are good in till the nut has lost its shine. It is very economic. I estimate one lot lasts 4-6 washes. SoapNuts are perfect for both top and front loader machines and can cope with temperatures up to Ninety Degrees. The SoapNuts do not have a scent but still leave your clothes fresh and clean. If you prefer a nice smell to your clean washing you can add a few drops of Essential Oils to your wash, I used Lemongrass.
SoapNuts can be used for much more than just your washing to, they can be used in the dishwasher, you can use them to make liquid soap, body wash and shampoo. There is also SoapNuts powder and liquid available. Two of my children and my partner suffer from eczema, The SoapNuts were great from this with no itching reported. I love that they are natural and easy to use!
