My family was keen to try the Del Sremska after tasting the awesome plain sausage from the same company. I liked the idea that there was a choice between mild and hot. Because our family likes eating dry sausage by itself after experiences in France, mild was the obvious choice.
At first I was a little surprised to see that the sausage in the package looked rather moist. This is not what I am use to with dry sausage and so was worried that it would be sticky on the outside. After fighting my way into the packaging (this is not easy to keep in tack if you want to reseal in the packet) I was surprise to find that it was not sticky just a little oily - but nothing too bad.
The aroma that hit me was a smoky smell and I was quick to slice off a piece and chew away. The texture was that of a French dry sausage and it was full of flavour. This sausage was enjoyed by all the family piece by piece.
I love the idea that this does not need to be refrigerated before opening which means it can be hidden in the cupboard for that special day, thrown in the camping gear or taken as a plate with some nice cheeses (all been kept at room temperature - the best way to have both).
Although plain is definitely my favourite this I know would be more palatable to put on a tasting plate. Will be keeping this in mind for those times.
My husband and I both love a good salami so my husband's eyes lit up when he saw that I had a couple of Delbos salamis to review. He asked me every night if he was allowed to have some knowing that I also wanted to try it myself and use some in cooking. He was delighted when I put a chunk of mild Sremska in front of him. He opted to eat his straight just as I had. There were no complaints from either of us as we ate our salami.
This salami has a much milder taste than the venison we were also given. It had a good blend of seasoning to the meat. There was no doubt that it was a quality product. There were no cheap ingredients and it was proudly labelled 100% NZ meat and NZ made. You get what you pay for with this product. It is not a salami that you would purchase often but you will appreciate it when you do.
I chose to use some of the pork salami in mini quiches. I found it hard to slice neatly but the chunks of meal looked good in the quiche. As they were cooking the smell made me salivate. I was so impatient to try one that I nearly burnt my mouth. They tasted so good and I ate more than I intended.
Having sampled two of Delbos products I am now keen to try more. They are something I will pick up as a special treat for my husband and I to share although this is one I am sure our kids would like too. I just didn't want to waste a good salami on them. Since it doesn't require refrigeration it is easier to hid for the family.
We are salami fans in our house but also need salami that is gluten free. I was excited to see that this Sremska Mild pork salami was not only gluten free but also free of preservatives and artificial colours. This was already a good start so I was looking forward to opening the packet to use on our Saturday night pizza.
Breaking into the packet was some what tricky. This Salami is vacuum packaged in a sealed plastic bag and then the written info is wrapped separately around. On my salami it was really tight and because I wasn't planning to use it all up I wanted to keep the packaging intact. It was a real struggle to get the salami out which was a definite negative for me. Although I hadn't handled the packaging much the print had worn off a lot also so although it has serving suggestions mine had worn off so I couldn't read it. If I have read the print correctly however this salami does not need to be kept in the fridge until opened so is fantastic for tramping and camping (or taking on a picnic on a hot day). It contains two servings of 90 grams each. The salami does come in two sausages.
When I eventually go the packet open and started slicing for the pizza I had to keep batting away hands. between Hubby and four kids (and me) everyone was quite happy having this plain! It was a bit coarse and had gristly bits of fat but in that regard it wasn't as processed and refined as some salamis. We all loved the taste. Given I had to defend half of it for the pizza I would say unanimously everyone loved it straight. On pizza though it was even better. I think perhaps cooking it got rid of the gristly bits that I wasn't keen on and the taste was just fantastic. You can really taste the wood smoke and this taste the way salami should taste. I didn't need to worry about the Keeps refrigerated for seven days as we ate the whole packet
At $12 this isn't a salami that I would purchase often but if I could afford it I would buy this in preference to other salamis. This is definitely a salami that the whole family like and was great on pizza. I would definitely recommend trying this and definitely worth considering for tramping, camping and picnics where other meats might spoil quickly.
