I believe, from what I can hear, that either my daughter or my wife has just been attacked. I don't know the outcome. The house is silent.

Fourteen years ago two teenage lovers were brutally murdered in a patch of remote woodland. The prime suspect confessed to the crimes and was imprisoned.

Now, one family is still trying to put the memory of the killings behind them. But at their isolated hilltop house . . . the nightmare is about to return.

I had read the review on KIWIreviews and it sounded great so I thought I would find it in the library and read it, I'm glad I did. It looked like an interesting story, it was a bit confusing in the beginning, I wasn't sure how the people fit together. One thought I had was that part was probably based in the past but was I read further I started putting the story together.

The characters are well written and you can feel the fear of the unknown, the horror of it all. Why had the family been targeted? What did the captors have planned for them? Was there any hope of escape as rescue would be out of the question being so remote. After a while it is easier to wish for death.

The ending was half unexpected, the truth about the old murders is revealed. I had started realising the truth but not all of it. can't imagine that kind of hate or that kind of violence.

I like crime, drama and horror so I enjoyed the book but some might find it rather graphic. I will have to see if I can find any other books by Mo Hayder as it is great to discover new authors and styles of writing.

Well I have not read an adult fiction book in a very long time, I have read quite a lot of young adult horror reads but nothing really compares to the intensity of an adult thriller and this one was right up there with some of the really good ones I have read. I complete lost myself in this book, nail biting, tear shedding lost myself in the suspense and the fear. I found myself jumping to every bump or noise outside in the night as I let the book completely take over my imagination like a good horror movie does, love it!!

I haven't read any of Mo Hayders books before and from a quick google search I see there are more books with the same character Jack in them so I would love to seek these out and read these also. This book had a great plot with the Anchor Ferres family going to stay in their holiday home in the middle of nowhere following the husband Olivers open heart surgery. Thinking everything is normal Matilda the wife goes out to garden where she finds a nasty surprise which acts as a reminder of a murder that happened long ago.

Help comes in the form of two detectives investigating a murder next door, but in turn we find out that they are not detectives and are not here to help at all and now the family are held hostage and put through all sorts of bizzarre and horrifying events. It kept you on the edge of your seat as you read just urging the detective Jack to put together the pieces and rescue the Ancor Ferres family before it was too late. Although a long and intense read I got through it pretty quickly as I couldn't put the book down.

The ending came as a bit of a shock and was very upsetting be warned if you are like me you may shed some tears but well worth the read. I will definitely be looking out for more books by Mo Hayder in the future!
