My 3 year old son is just totally besotted with Fireman Sam, I have imported the toys and the watches a DVD almost every day. I hate to admit but we have 10 or so Fireman Sam DVDs so when I saw 'Hero at Sea' up for grabs on the review I was so keen to get my hands on it as it was one we did not have! My son was so excited when it arrived and it got put on straight away.
The animations in this series are top-notch, super colourful and very seamless - I cannot fault the production of the series at all. It's aesthetically very pleasing to the eye.
The theme song is really catchy, and the basic 'plot' of each short episode is about safety which I really like. It is teaching children how to be safe in dangerous situations and they don't always relate to fire - although most do. We are from a boating family and I really like that this particular DVD looks at water safety in boats - just the simple touches like life jackets normalizes it for when the children do start participating in water sports.
My son's day-care had firemen come in wearing the big fire suits with the masks so the children (if they were ever needing to be rescued) wouldn't be so afraid of these alien type things getting them, which I think is just fantastic. This series also sheds away the scariness of the situation and shows that emergency service people are there to help you - and it's ok to ask for help!
This DVD shows a girl Lily and her mother - two characters that I have not seen before on the series - it was great to see a character of a different ethnic background on the show - showing that they are proactively catering for a widening audience.
Norman Price is usually the main character of the episodes but this DVD doesn't always focus on his mischievous antics and allows other 'side' characters play a bigger role - it's nice to see some of the female characters taking centre stage. I think this is one of the best collections of episodes yet - it's a sure fire favourite in this house - even I can't get sick of the crew at Pontypanty!

The series follows Patrick Jane, an independent consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He uses skills from his former career as a successful, yet admittedly fraudulent, psychic medium to help a team of CBI agents solve murders. The real reason for Patrick Jane's involvement with law enforcement is to track down the serial killer known as Red John, who was responsible for the brutal murders of his wife and his ... more...
