Product reviews...
In this house we LOVE garlic and almost everything with garlic in it, going so far as to using it in pretty much every meal so this was a must for us.
Our first try of the cheese was just to cut it up into small slices and pop on a cracker with some margarine. My mum was most eager to try some too so she joined us in trying this during our weekly movie night. Giving this a sniff we could smell the garlic, always a good start for us, and so getting the crackers ready couldn't happen quickly enough. This has a nice taste to it, could taste the herbs without a doubt, my only thought (which my husband agreed with) was that we couldn't taste the garlic as strongly as we would have hoped (yes, there is a fine line and it needs to be not too strong) but we still would have liked a tad more garlic to it.
The cheese is really easy to just keep on slicing away and eating it, so it was really hard to put some away for experimenting with. In the end it was easy to decide what to use it for when my son requested that I "make the mashed potatoes with the vegetables in it" and since I usually add cheese to my dish I thought why not the gouda? So I fried some garlic, onion and bacon together, then threw in the chopped up gouda (giving the remaining gouda to my mum who just ate it as is, yum yum) letting it melt. I then put my mix into the mashed potatoes along with frozen mixed veges and edam cheese. I don't think I've ever eaten such creamy mashed potatoes, it was so gorgeous and it got a big thumbs up from my three kids.
Other than the wish for more garlic in this, it is a delicious gouda and went down a treat in our house.
I love the taste of garlic and chives so I was quite sure that Meyer's Garlic and Chives cheese was going to be a hit with me. Of the three products from the range I was given to review this was definitely my favourite. It has a strong garlic flavour so yo ucan ward off any vampires in your path. The chives are more subtle and the cheese just seems to complement it all. The aroma when I opened the wrapper had me salivating and this only intensified when it was heated.
The label said it makes the best grilled cheese sandwich so I had to try and see for myself. I sliced tomato, mushroom and topped it off with the cheese. Waiting for it to cook was a lesson in patience and it looked and smelt so good and I was hungry. The taste didn't let me down. It was fantastic. I enjoyed it so much that I made another one and devoured that too. Meyer's claim is true. It was the best grilled sandwich I have ever had.
This is the only one of the cheeses that I did not let anyone else sample. This was mainly because I enjoyed it so much that it didn't last long. I think that my husband will be the only one in our household that I will be competing with for it as my girls are not garlic fans. The price makes it a treat rather than an everyday cheese but it is one that I will be definitely be buying again and hiding from my husband.
I was really looking forward to trying this one as garlic is one of my favourite flavours. I opened the packet and was a bit disappointed by the lack of garlic smell. I cut an initial slither of cheese off to do the taste test and again, I couldn't taste enough garlic. I do like a strong garlic flavour and I feel it was lacking in this cheese. Personally I would pump up the garlic!
After my initial taste, I noted that the cheese was best served at room temperature, so I took it out of the fridge in order to let it warm up prior to the next experiment. I do think that it tasted nicer after being out of the fridge but I can't say that it tasted much more garlicky than before. While it was out, I looked at the packet. I read the ingredients and found that it was very simple in what it had in it. It was nice to see that it made from real food, without any added extras.
The package suggested that it "makes the best grilled cheese sandwich". I thought I would follow this suggestion and put it to the test. I had some Farrah wraps and I decided the combination was worth a go.
I made two different options. Both were on Farrah Wraps (Multigrain). On one I had tomato paste, corned beef and Meyer Garlic and Chives cheese. The other one had tomato paste, portobello mushrooms and Meyer Garlic and Chives cheese. I cut the cheese into slices rather than grating as the I thought it might look nice. I also felt that it wasn't like a big block of cheese that seems more prone to being grated onto a pizza like this. The pizzas were quick to make and were ready to eat without too much delay. The cheese melted nicely and looked good with the other ingredients. Both pizzas tasted really nice but I couldn't say that the cheese stood out as a specific flavour.
I like this cheese but I probably wouldn't buy it as it didn't stand out to me. Perhaps if I hadn't read that it was garlic and chives I would have a different opinion as I think my thoughts have been affected by the garlic not being strong enough.
I was lucky enough to be given some of this cheese to review. I love speciality cheeses although don't buy them that regularly, however if I do buy them I would go for a garlic flavour as my first choice, so I knew I was going to love this cheese... and I did!
I kept this cheese for myself and my husband (my 5 year old didn't even get a look in!) and both of us loved it. In fact out of the 3 Meyer cheeses we tried, this one was the only one my husband really loved. I personally thought the flavour wasn't overpowering but I liked this about it - the taste and texture of the cheese itself was still the highlight.
It's supposed to make a great melted cheese sandwich and so I made sure to try it this way too - I did just bread and cheese and it was delicious. It melted nicely (although not as quickly as normal cheese) and I was happy with how the flavour remained with it... perhaps even a more enhanced flavour.
I'd definitely buy this cheese - in fact I'm salivating over another grilled cheese sandwich already - what a shame this cheese was all eaten and gone within a couple of days!
"Yummy" is the one word my Miss Seven had for this cheese. We had barely got inside and she was begging to get the wrapper off it to eat. We agreed to have it after dinner so she requested all through dinner that she be allowed to have it for pudding with crackers! It certainly motivated her to eat dinner quickly.
We got out our crackers and proceeded to eat about half of our 150 g wedge. I had to stop Miss Seven from eating it as I wanted to try it in a toasted sandwich. The verdict from both of us was that this cheese was very, very nice and we would both like to have more!
The following day I got out the toastie maker and made a toasted sandwich with the garlic and chives Gouda and tomato. This was quite possibly the best cheese and tomato toastie I have ever had. I would definitely buy this cheese again if only to have with tomato toasted sandwiches. So so good! The following day I had a a toastie again but without the tomato. That was good to but I preferred it with tomato.
I am into my natural products and as with any good cheese this Gouda did not disappoint. It is hand made using pasteurized cows milk, sat, rennet, culture and garlic and chives. I would look out for this because it is made in New Zealand as well as its taste.
I absolutely loved the taste of this Gouda and the texture at room temperature is perfect. My Miss Seven is desperate for me to buy more so its good to see they do bigger blocks. It is a big jump however from 150 g to a 1 kilo block though so we might stick to the smaller size. If you like toasted sandwiches or you want a great cheese for your crackers and cheese night this is a brilliant choice. I would wholeheartedly recommend giving this a try.
I was convinced that the Garlic and Chives cheese from Meyer's Cheese was going to be in my top 1 or 2. After trying this against two others in the range, I have to say it was a close run thing with the Fenugreek. The first day or two we had this cheese in the fridge, I invited friends over and we had a cheese board as part of a dinner party. I put this platter in front of everyone and they all dug in.
The first adult, said that the garlic and chives was by far the tastiest and nicest cheese ever. He requested that I get some more for the next time he came over. The second adult agreed that the flavour was really good. It is strongly garlicky which manages to shine through the cheese despite it having a sharp bite of full-bodied cheese as well. My husband made a few grunts of appreciation.
My eldest daughter said it was not her favourite and promptly gave her piece to our youngest daughter, who scoffed the lot and begged for more. They both have very different opinions on cheese. Miss 6's favourite was spat out by Miss 22 months, so there you go.
On another evening, I made up macaroni cheese, and did individual cups for each child with their favourite cheese. I used Miss 22 month's favourite cheese - the Garlic and Chives one. I topped the meal with cutlets of the cheese. After grilling the top, I found that it was quite oily. So I don't think it's really a cheese to be baked with. All the same, the smell was delicious and garlicky. I gave this to my daughter, and she ate til she was full. I managed to get a small helping, and the flavour really went through nicely. I would consider using it again for the whole family, because it was so nice and different to our usual Edam. Though I think I would mix it with the Edam to cut back the oiliness.
This would be great in a gift hamper, on a cheese board or as part of a morning tea shout at work. I know my workmates would enjoy a slice of this on a rice cracker as we had at home. The choice is yours on sizing your block too. For the price and given the specialty nature of the cheese, I think it's great value.
