We join the crew of the Enterprise in their fourth year of voyages through the Alpha Quadrant.
The fourth season is a much more family and friends orientated lot of episodes, and given they are still reeling from the effects of "The Best of Both Worlds" (Part one and two) which caused a large number of deaths and the assimilation of Captain Picard I can't really find fault with it, especially as they still manage to keep a good balance between family, friends, tension and action. This season has a lot of character building which does well as the halfway season. Setting the next few seasons up well and giving us more insight into favourite characters.
We get a little bit more background for Captain Picard when he spends shore leave with his brother and family on Earth, Worf trying to get his families honour back and finding out that he is a father, Wesley Crusher and Captain Picard becoming closer and even Data gets a look in when he is summoned by his father/creator and meets his brother, Lore (a great episode and sets a good scene for even more episodes with him).
Season four is good for building up our characters and giving them more depth.

"I like to pick up hitchhikers. When they get in the car I say, "Put on your seat belt. I want to try something. I saw it once in a cartoon, but I think I can do it."
