Firewall Protection and QoS
The security features that have been integrated into this device prevent unauthorized access to the home and office network, be it from the wireless devices or from the Internet. The router provides firewall security using Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) and hacker attack logging for Denial of Service (DoS) attack protection. SPI inspects the contents of all incoming packet headers before deciding what packets are allowed to pass through. Router access control is provided with packet filtering based on port and source/ destination MAC/IP addresses. For Quality of Service (QoS), the router supports multiple priority queues to enable a group of home or office users to experience the benefit of smooth network connection of inbound and outbound data without concern of traffic congestion. This QoS support allows users to enjoy high ADSL transmission speeds for applications such as VoIP and streaming multimedia over the Internet.
mydlink Cloud Services
Using built-in cloud technology this router provides easy access to your stored personal files and multimedia across all your devices including Smartphones and tablets whenever a USB storage device is connected to the router's USB port. Simply download the free SharePlay app5 for iPhones, iPads and Android devices to stream content directly to your mobile devices. This router also comes with the unique mydlink Cloud Services, so that you can monitor and manage your home network from wherever you are, 24/7, via the mydlink portal from your laptop or via a free app from your Smartphone or tablet. Keep up to date when new devices are connecting to your network, block unwanted access or monitor in real-time websites that are being visited - great for parents

We have a modem provided by our broadband provider that is a year or so old now. It is adequate but despite having broadband it is often extremely frustrating watching media over the internet as it is very slow and often takes long time to buffer meaning that the program will keep halting during play. I was thus pretty excited at the prospect of a router that would provide a fast internet link that would mean less time waiting for things to happen on the screen and more time to actually watch what I wanted to watch and access content.
The box description was promising with its "click n connect" setup Wizard that claimed to have the whole setup take only a few minutes. That was a huge attraction for me as I am not at all computer literate when it comes to anything other than the basics. That was the big hurdle however as despite the claims I had three attempts trying to set up the router which comes in a box with everything you will need. The modem, all the cables, the set up disc and the telephone connector/splitter. I was stumped each time at the initial instructions to disable my present firewall. No matter how much searching I did I couldn't figure out what to do. I had to admit defeat.
Hubby eventually, after much nagging, agreed to help however even between the two of us it still took an hour and a half to set up and it wasn't a pleasant hour and a half! The problem was that the instructions on the cd showed a different computer screen to what ours showed so it was very difficult to navigate our computer system to do what needed to be done to install and connect the new system. There was also reference to a blue cable but the cable we had been provided was yellow. Eventually however we found our way and having used various passwords we finally figured out which ones were the ones we needed to connect other devices so I could connect my laptop and phone. Although we had the minimum system requirements with microsoft windows 8 the setup disc only had instructions for vista and XP which is why it took us awhile to get things figured out.
That is where my frustration ended. Suddenly we had amazing internet speed. A click would instantaneously call up whatever we wanted. You tube and on demand content playing instantly with no waiting for buffering. It is fantastic to be able to have an instant response to a click and I am absolutely stoked with the increase in our internet speed. The range that the signal reaches is better than our modem that this has replaced. Despite that frustration we had getting it connected it was worth it. This is definitely a far superior product to what we previously had and I am so pleased with how much better the wireless connection speed is.
In case you are wondering this does have a telepermit so is fine to use in New Zealand. This model is also designed to conserve energy, protect our environment from harmful substances and reduce waste by using recyclable packaging. The packaging is indeed recyclable. With the cardboard box presently being used as a Barbie hideout, the inner going into the compost and the ties going into my kitchen draw no waste was thrown out aside from the miniscule plastic wrapping. This came packaged with a $50 cash back offer which is always a welcome incentive to buy.
I would definitely recommend this product and am really pleased that we have this.
