Product reviews...
When you want avocado for a specific dish, it can be so disappointing when you find the one you have in the fridge is over-ripe, stringy and inedible. Fressure's Avocado Spread is definitely an alternative to the risk of having a disaster. The price is quite high, however, if you have experienced some of the really bad avocados in the shops, it is nice to have a product that you can see is of good quality. There are not that many packaged products out there that have two ingredients in them. This one simply has avocado (99.5%) and a small amount of salt (just 0.5%).
Straight out of the pack, the spread tasted like avocado with a bit of added salt and funnily enough, that is exactly what it was. The slight lumps in the mix made it a little more interesting and gave the sensation that it really was avocado in there. My preference would be avocado without salt, but I imagine that the salt is required in order to help preserve the avocado and it was certainly better than some of the brown, stringy avocados that I have tasted in the paste.
Now, to search from something to do with this yummy treat that wasn't an obvious option. The more reviews I do, the more I look at the website relating to the product to see what they have to offer. The first thing I noted was that the look and feel of the website links perfectly to the look and feel of the packaging. I have decided that I really like the font that they use, it is kind of quirky!
I found that there were recipes for Avocado bread, popsicles, cakes, fudge and many other options. The one that stood out to me was the milkshake. I had to try it. It was so different. Who would have ever thought of having an avocado milkshake??!! The popsicles sounded fun but I didn't feel like waiting 5 hours for them to freeze. I was excited about trying a recipe out now. The milkshake was quite simple to make - the Avocado Spread, ice-cream, milk, vanilla and lemon extracts. I can't drink milk, so I substituted in soy milk for my share and I don't think I have ever had lemon extract in my house so I added in a little lemon juice hoping that would do the trick! The rest of the family drink milk, so I used a bit of soy milk initially to blend everything up and then took out my share so I could add normal cows milk to the rest of the mix. I then put mine back in the blender and topped it up with soy so it was a drinkable texture. Both versions blended up really well and produced a beautifully creamy texture. My son was disappointed that it wasn't a really green drink, as green is his favourite colour and when he saw the avocado going in, he assumed that it would be green! The rest of the family LOVED the milkshake and it went down really quickly. in fact, the kids make plenty of slurping sounds with their straws as they attempted to get every last drop out. I wasn't 100% sure about it as there was a bit of a funny taste to it in my opinion. I am thinking that perhaps it was the soy milk flavour coming through and taking over. Regardless of my thoughts on the flavour, it was a fun alternative to do with avocados and we had fun experimenting in our house.
I found the packaging appealing to the eye and I liked the fact that there are two individual servings in the packet. This prevents unnecessary wastage. I think the avocado spread is something that I will keep in my mind for the times when I need to have perfect avocado for a particular dish. It isn't something I would buy regularly, simply because of the price. I do, however, understand that the price is probably fair, considering the costs involved in getting it to the supermarket shelves.
In Aztec Mexico, the original version of Gucamole was pretty much just this - ripe avocado mashed in a mortar with sea salt. the "KISS" principle at its most refined. So, though I can see why the company chose to call this an "avocado spread", it is very much the truest roots of what we now call guacamole. No onions, garlic, chickpeas, tomato, herbs... just the finest avocado and a touch of salt to add a hint of extra flavour.
Of the four varieties we reviewed, this was the second most favoured, since it carried only the flavour of avocado. Though I am really the only person in the house who enjoys the taste and texture of the avocado fruit, this spread was versatile enough to be mixed with some sour cream to be used on top of nachos. It was enjoyed by three of the four 'testers' - Mr5 was not at all impressed and flatly refused to have any more after the obligatory "one taste please" we require of him for all new foods.
Personally, I found it a little "quiet" for my tastes, and it didn't take me long to sneak some garlic and ground black pepper into it. The fact that it took these extra flavours in its stride was great, as a versatile food is a favoured food in *my* kitchen! I enjoy exploring foods, so a product with limited range is not one I will tolerate for long. Thankfully, this has so much scope for 'personalisation' it will always have a place here.
Overall, an excellent Kiwi product, and one that Fressure can feel justly proud of. If you enjoy Guacamole, but don't want to risk wasting avocados, or aren't too sure about how to select them at their best, save yourself the hassle and just buy a couple of packs of this - it will last for ages, comes in easy single-serving portions, and can take almost anything you care to add to it.
After trying the guacamole hummus, I was more confident to try this spread. I first tried this dip with some nacho chips, and it was actually a bit strange-tasting. There was a bit of a metallic taste that resulted from my trying this dip, but it wasn't that bad, either. I found that having this dip with bread, on the other hand, was much better. It is from this that I have sourced the confidence that this dip will make a great spread for sandwiches or toast.
I found that since opening the packet, the guacamole began going brown with a day, and then it started to look like soy sauce, and this was before I saw the piece of text on the box that said, quote: "After opening, use within six hours", as I forgot that avocado can oxidise pretty quickly. I recognized this same issue with the other guacamole flavours as well. This dip has got a multitude of uses, from a dip, to a spread, to a side-sauce, and many more, so I think I'll give that aspect a 10/10.
I am unaware of the price for this product, but I'm confident that if I did know the price, then I think that it would be perfect in comparison with the value of the product. To sum things up, the taste of this stuff was quite nice, it wasn't that great with nacho chips, but it was great with bread. So, I think that If you enjoy guacamole, than you should love this stuff. Enjoy!
This was so nice we used it with some Farrah's wraps lightly fried in butter and garlic with some chives. Being the plainer of the 4 flavours in the range we figured it would compliment the garlic chive taste the best and we were not wrong - dipped the guac straight from ramekins, both 100g pouches disappeared quickly as the smooth flavour and texture went perfectly with the fried crispy home-made tortilla chips.
Our packets had some larger soft chunks of avo which I don't think were meant to be there but no complaints as it really did add a slightly different overall taste when you dug them out with the tortillas. The pouches are not perforated so you can't just rip them apart but other than that I found myself using a teaspoon and trying to expertly extract every last amount out of the pouch. I like quite large scoops with dipping chips so the 200g went fast but was a great appetizer. Would definitely recommend you try this flavour out.
I wanted to do something different with Fressure Food's Avocado Spread as to me it seemed to be more of an ingredient whereas the other Fressure Foods products were stand alone dips. Prior to trying this product there ware only two ways I had mashed avocado, as a spread or in guacamole. I looked on http://www.fressurefoods.co.nz/ and saw so many different ideas for using the spread in both sweet and savory dishes. This is such a versatile product.
The idea of using avocado in a sweet dish intrigued me so I chose to make avocado fudge. This is the easiest fudge I have even made. Unfortunately it didn't set properly but that was due to me not following instructions. I offered it to several people to try and they were all surprised to find out later that the chocolate fudge they had eaten contained avocado. It tasted just like chocolate icing and the children were begging for more.
The spread isn't totally smooth but it is what I would refer to as baby food texture. The lumps are all very soft and although I could see them I could feel them when eating it. Most of the lumps disappeared when mixing it or spreading. I have been having this in a salad sandwich and find when I use it don't need to use butter or a dressing so it makes it a healthier sandwich. It is also great in kebabs as it isn't as watery as most dressings so you don't get the juice dripping out as much as you normally would.
Thank you Fressure Foods and KIWIreviews for introducing me to this great product. It is a practical thing to have in your fridge and I will be suggesting it to anyone that complains to me about the struggle to find a decent avocado.
This was the first avocado spread that I tried from Fressure and so far it has been the most versatile in the range. The first time I tried it was as a side dish for a meal. I had it squeezed onto toast. I love that this comes in a packet that has two 100ml sections. I was able to cut one side open and make my toast. Loved pushing this out onto my toast and see the real lumps of avocado flesh through the spread.
I also gave my toddler some of this. I enjoyed my toast. However, I did find a slight bitter after taste. My toddler on the other hand didn't really touch hers. I thought about other ways to use this spread. One thing I had heard of was avocado brownies so I did some research. When I didn't find what I was looking for, I made up a brownie by substituting butter for this avocado spread.
The brownie came out beautifully and everyone in my family loved it. You could tell there was avocado in it. Not because of the taste, but the texture had that smoothness that avocado naturally has. It was a great way to use up the spread and it made me excited to try the other spreads in this range.
