After an accident that killed his brother, Carl is left with amnesia. This adds really really well to the book as the character knows as much as we do, so we are learning about his world at the same time as he is. This creates so much opportunity for the creation of the world inside this book and boy oh boy does the author make use of this opportunity.
I really felt for Carl, which doesn't always happen for me and a character in a book, his life has been tough and his mother is an alcoholic, a factor that I don't think is addressed enough in this book, but that is I would assume there was a word count.
This book was spooky and haunting. I must warn you now of the following: Do not read this book in the bath (as I did), you may be scarred for life. Water plays a really big part in this book, hence the name The Drowning, and so I don't think you'll ever see a lake in the same light again.
I really enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes something a bit spookier than what you may usually read. I am interested in exploring her books further.
I honestly don't know whether I loved or hated this book, yeah sure I had to keep reading and certainly lost track of time as I just had to read another page and then another. The thing is the I just didn't really like the story it was bone chilling and quite spooky and I just think the story leans itself more to a movie than a book as the vivid descriptions I could just not picture.
I have never been a believer in ghosts or any form of poltergeist activity but Rachel Ward in this book certainly keeps the intensity of the story alive from beginning to end and her descriptions certainly make you get a bit of a shiver. I think that is why this would make such a good movie as it would always have you on the edge of your seats anticipating the next scream.
In the story the main character Carl wakes up to find his brother has drowned in the lake and he and a girl have survived he is taken to hospital but he doesn't remember anything. He has to regain his memory in order to figure out what happened and is haunted by his brothers ghost. His brother wants revenge he wants to kill Carl and kill the girl. He can't get away from his brothers haunting voices and images every time he gets wet he is there and his brother can use the water somehow against him.
There is quite a nice love story that ensues as Carl realizes the girl in the lake his brothers girlfriend is the girl he loves and there relationship gets closer. He will do anything to save her from his dead brother. There is quite a lot of action as Carl battles against his brothers haunting to save Neisha and you want to keep reading to make sure they get away that they make it stop.
In the end you don't really know whether they got rid of him or not, they have both survived the floods against all odds and now Neisha is leaving town with her Dad. The ending is a little bit annoying as it doesn't give much away, it either hints that they are back in the lake or that they are merely embracing each other on top of the ice of the frozen lake I couldn't quite figure it out.
I think teenagers would enjoy this book and even some adults as it is quite an intense story and easy to read. I however would probably not pick up the book any time soon and read it again, however if there were a movie I would be compelled to watch it :)
