My daughter loves Activity books, but often she doesn't want to stop and read instructions or do what is required. I handed this book to her and she gasped with excitement. She really loves animals of all kinds, but at the moment birds are her absolute favourite. There is a toucan on the cover of this book, and that was an automatic win right there. Toucans are a bird she draws quite often and talks a lot about. She loves their large beaks.
Once inside the book, she flipped right to the stickers and wanted to get some paper to make a picture with them. I was a bit mean and suggested we sit and just try to do some of the activities in the book first. I explained that the stickers would be used throughout the book to fill in sections and we could then learn some things about the animals. This satisfied her a little, though I could see she was hoping there would be some left over stickers to do art and craft with. She does love to make "creations".
Every sticker in the middle was spoken for except the footprint stickers. This was good, because it meant I could promise some stickers even if they weren't the animals she wanted. This book is filled with great quizzes, process map style questions and loads of facts about animals. My daughter knows enough about animals that some of the questions were easy for her. This meant that she remained confident as she did each activity and she didn't lose interest, while reinforcing the learning. This book is definitely her sort of book, and held her interest for a good long time. At $12, it seems expensive for an activity book but once the stickers are placed it will be a great animal resource book for the shelf.
I don't usually go for activity books when it comes to my 5 year old as he just never seems interested. I'm very drawn in by book covers and when I saw this up for offer I put my hand up and was lucky to get a copy.
You open it up and has a nice amount of detail without be chaotic and starts off with a couple of activities, a true of false set of questions, finding the answer and starting off with the stickers. But then it changes. Instead of simply flipping over to the next page you follow the Animal Quest (bottom of the left page). It gives you a question and two choices, you pick one and follow it to the directed page where you then learn some facts and do some activities.
One thing I really liked about it is that my son got a bit fussy with his sticker placement at times (wanting it to be spot on in the lines) and so the stickers were put on, taken off, put on again, and there was no tearing, no ripping of the paper, brilliant!
My son really liked this book, he did 6 pages in a row before I had to make him stop as it was time for me to make dinner. Given it was with my five year old, I did need to stay with him, read it all etc, but he loved the mummy and me time and so did I.
