Turkish Calzone - Deli Meats product reviews

Proud to promote NZ productsCalzone is an Italian word. Traditionally Calzone is a pizza that is cooked folded in half - much like a Cornish pasty is a folded pie.

Our Calzone is handmade, like all of our products, in our stone oven with the best ingredients available. Healthier than a pie, tastier than a bag of chips - less fat than both!

Put it in your lunchbox they're just as good cold and you can even microwave them... if you must.

To be honest, I was hoping for a lot more from this, being a total carnivore as I am. If I look at each element in the product - hand-made Turkish bread, meats, rich tomato sauce - there's nothing to fault, and indeed I want to make it clear that this product is in no way a failure... it just didn't really live up to my expectations.

The meats were great - salami, cabanosi, ham - these have very strong and distinctive flavours... but they were somehow drowned out by the tomato sauce, leaving everything coming across as "three different textured, tomato-flavoured, meats of some kind." But hey... I still mostly enjoyed it because - when it comes down to it - it was meat, in tomato sauce, and served in a really delightful, light Turkish bread.

Though not at all as quick to prepare as the packaging would lead you to believe - which may be more accurate if you start from room-temperature or you use the interior of a turbine pulse engine as your oven - it was still a quick heat'n'eat meal for two... for mine to reach a suitable, food-safe core temperature, where the centre of the meat reached at least 65 degrees, took closer to 12 minutes. This was far longer than the suggested 5-6 minutes, but is neither here nor there in my books because I am quite used to waiting that long for decent snack food to get heated or cooked.

Overall, this is one I certainly plan to have again, but it is likely to get some modicum of modification first... I'm thinking more along the lines of slicing it onto a plate, with a crisp green leafy salad and some grilled vege kebabs or some asparagus spears sauteed in garlic-butter then finished off under the grill with a sprinkle of colby cheddar melted over them. I got this Calzone Deli Meats bread to try this evening. Since I didn't have anything out for dinner and it was my turn, I decided we would have this, a pizza and some garlic bread. The first thing I noticed about this product was that the plastic bag was heavy plastic and good quality. It also had a nice little nick in the top of the bag, which made it super easy to rip open. That's a winner with me because I'm terrible with opening things.

I didn't even look at the instructions, because I'm not that sort of person. I put my oven on - it's gas and only has two settings (on and off) and then heated the Calzone for as long as I could keep the troops quiet. I got it out and realised it was still cold in the middle. So I cut the bread into inch thick fingers. The bread was really easy to cut, which was another plus for it.

After another while (having feed the troops one pizza) I got these calzone fingers out. I plated them with fingers of garlic bread and let my family at them. My husband was very hungry by this point. But he didn't enjoy the calzone at all. He said it was a bit too tomato-flavoured. When I bit into mine I found the meat was still cold, despite a good 30 minutes in my oven. There was heaps of meat in it, but I could hardly taste the meat at all. The tomato sauce had a peppery kick to it and that's all I could taste.

My eldest daughter monstered everything on her plate except the calzone. She had tasted it and decided it wasn't for her. My youngest daughter otherwise known as the vacuum cleaner, took a big mouthful of the meat mixture and promptly spat it out. This is very unusual for her, so I can only conclude that the calzone was not for her either. Its a shame, because I think it's a great idea. But unfortunately, the sauce overpowered the whole thing making it too hard a sell here.

Some friends texted to say they were on their way for a visit and I had a sudden panic as it was lunch time so I turned the oven on, grabbed a deli meats calzone and a garlic bread out of the freezer and set to work on a pumpkin soup. By the time the soup was bubbling away the oven was heated and the breads defrosted, so into the oven for about 7 minutes and wallah I had a very delish lunch to serve up.

Four kids and two adults scoffed the lot in record time and everyone loved the calzone. I had to fess up that I hadn't made it myself but it tasted so home made and lovely I was very tempted not to!! The ingredients are all natural except for the salami and ham (which would have been full of preservatives etc if I had bought them myself to make this from scratch) so I liked that I had served up "good" food.

This Deli Meats Calzone was absolutely divine. I loved the flavour and the texture of the fillings and it was a perfect amount of filling for the bread. The bread itself is so good I really want the recipe. So lovely and moist and fluffy its not really "pizza" but its perfect. I loved the ease in which I could whip up a lovely lunch (though I don't always have a pumpkin to grab from my garden) that tasted like I had spent the morning in the kitchen instead of having just walked in the door. I would definitely buy this for a Sunday lunch or easy dinner and would recommend keeping one or two in the freezer to use for an impressive lunch.

This gets top marks from our visitors and my family. Very, very yum!

Okay, I have never tried Calzone before, but now I know that this type at least is rather nice. I found out that Calzone is pretty much just a folded pizza, and this pretty much fit that description. This stuff is pretty much a model of flavour, with every mouthful my taste buds were pummelled with the flavours of pepper, bacon, sauce and sausage. The pastry was nice, it wasn't really the type you use in pizzas, it was more along the lines of pie pastry.

With the cooking time, do NOT do what the instructions say unless you are cooking from thawed. I cooked mine straight from frozen, and on previous occasions things have gotten a bit awkward with finding a set cooking time, so this time I just put it in and didn't set the timer, I took it out when the meat was nice and soft and there were no frozen parts in the pastry. This time I wasn't able to eat the whole thing, apparently one Calzone is a meal for 2, but with the other breads I've been able to handle eating all of it.

The price is okay, it is more expensive than the cheesy garlic bread, but considering that this is a Calzone, not a garlic bread, the higher price is understandable. The portion size is good, it is big enough to feed 2 people and can even feed more if it is chopped up and added to something else, like pasta. Taste is, of course, through the roof, it gets a full 10 on the score bar but is actually a 12 in my opinion. After eating this, I am tempted to try finding Calzone recipes, 'cause this was really nice. I am looking forward to trying the Spinach and feta Calzone.

The first thing that I noticed about this (having already eaten the Spinach and Feta Calzone) is that there isn't as much filling, which considering the overflow that I had from the spinach and feta, looked like it had the perfect amount in it.

I had trouble with heating it up. Instructions on the bag state 5 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius. I had it in for ten minutes, then had to take it out, cut it up and then put it back in the oven for a couple more minutes to ensure that it was heated all the way through.

I liked the sauce that is on this bread, but that is about all that I like about this product. There was a bit too much spice and pepper to this, and I couldn't pick up the taste of ham at all. While this is a great serving size and that makes it worth the money, the taste lets it down.

I wouldn't buy this product, if I was given it I'd wait till I had a get-together or party and bring it out then.

My husband's eyes lit up when I showed him the deli meats calzone we were having for dinner. The kids were excited too. We are huge pizza fans an a meat-lovers is usually the first choice. This wasn't any ordinary meat pizza, I was low in cheese (not that we missed that at all) and loads of sauce and delicious meats. Gourmet is the word both my husband and I used to describe it. Every ingredient was top quality and our only criticism was the sauce was so strong that it masked the true flavour of the meats.

The servings of the calzones is very generous. The packet says it serves 2 so I heated up calzones for the 4 of us. I am a big eater and my husband isn't a small eater. The girls ate more than they usually would and there was still more than enough left over for lunch for me the next day. I reheated it in the sandwich press. It was so easy and no mess. I also sampled some straight from the fridge and both tasted great much nicer than leftover pizza usually tastes.

Since this was a hit with all of the family we will be buying it again for those nights that we need something just to throw in the oven. It is also classy enough to use to stretch out a meal if guests arrive unexpectedly or to serve cold at a picnic.
