Set in 1960s Baltimore, the story follows a plump young girl named Tracy Turnblad (NIKKI BLONSKI, in her acting debut) on an amazing journey as her dream of dancing on the popular Corny Collins Show becomes a reality.

I love a good musical and so even though I missed out on seeing this on the big screen it was still a must on the small screen.

Tracey Turnblad is sick of sitting in the background and longs to be on her favourite show, The Corny Collins Show, to the point where she skips class to audition to be on the show. She misses out, gets sent to detention where she befriends a black student and her life changes forever. Ending up on the show things get really shaken up when Tracey decides her black friends should be integrated on the show. Bring on some great dance numbers and some awesome songs, some of which make you want to get up and dance with the movie.

Nikki does a great job in her debut role, the supporting cast full of well known actors certainly help the movie along but Nikki could have held her own just fine had all the cast been relative unknowns. John Travolta does a rocking job as Tracey's mother, he pulls it off well injecting enough humour into the role without it feeling over the top and silly. There's no character in here that I don't like, so that's a big plus. I really enjoy this, on a blue day when I don't know what to do, this is one of my choices (though sometimes I skip forward to the songs) and it helps to pick me up.

If you like a good musical then this is one to add to your 'to watch' list.

My daughter was absolutely obsessed with the High School Musical movies, so when this one came out with the leading star being Zac Efron from High School Musical she just had to see it. I didn't really have high expectations for another musical movie and didn't think I would enjoy it all that much but I actually did find it quite an enjoyable movie.

It has such a nice story line with great messages of accepting others and anti racism. When Tracy Turnblad proves that despite her size being not what would traditionally be classed as film star she has what it takes to be a success. With lots of singing and dancing it really was a delight to watch and I did find myself tapping my foot to the music.

My daughter still watches this movie from time to time, and has probably watched it at least 50 times now so knows the movie off by heart, so I would say it is definitely enjoyable for young children but still enjoyable for adults too so it makes a great family movie.
