Product reviews...
Until I was lucky enough to be sent a Norton anti virus software pack to review by KIWIreviews, AVG anti virus free was my preferred software. For as long as I can remember I have used this free software whenever myself or my family have purchased a new computer or in more recent years, laptops.
AVG is a free virus protection program that you download directly from the internet straight to your PC. It is the most basic of free anti virus programmes offering the most basic of protection but as it is free you can notreally complain. It is a simple easy to use software, that ultimately once loaded on your computer can be set to run in the background without to much effort on your part.
I would recommend it as a decent enough program to use until you can get a trusted anti virus software. But for proper protection I would not recommend it as the only program you ever use against keeping your pc safe. It does not protect against everything and with so many new viruses, ways of hacking, malware, adware and more popping up daily it does not protect you against everything that can effectively damage yourvpc within seconds. As a temporary safe guard it will do the trick though.
A few years back, when I inherited a computer from my mum I googled for free anti-virus software, she'd had Norton on it but I really didn't like it, and so I came across AVG free edition.
Back when I got this, a good four years ago now, the basic version was just that, basic. You could scan your computer but it wasn't too helpful when it came down to viruses and getting rid of them, but at the time that was ok as it was free and it didn't clog up my system like other anti-virus softwares had which was a big plus for me.
Fast forward to today and I am still using the AVG free edition, having take advantage of the free full trials I can easily say that I have seen no big difference between the free and paid and we have had no nasty viruses sneak past and infect our computer. The scans don't slow down the computer and I can set it up to do a regular scan.
For a free product I LOVE this and am more than happy to keep on using it, four years and still going strong on my computer.
For a free product this is actually quite a good little package, admittedly this program doesn't support automatic updates, but it it very easy to use and I recommend this program for everyone I know that don't want to pay for some of the 'name brand' solutions. One advantage it does have is that it is very easy on the system resources, which for me means more memory & CPU resources available for my games
I also have used this product for months, even years. I love the product.
Its free, easy to use and It has caught and fixed a few of those nasty viruses. i have never had any trouble with AVG and have just dowloaded the AVG anti spyware. I recommend AVG to all my family and friends!!
Well, it's free... so you can't really complain too loudly.
It has missed a few well-documented trojans that I introduced into my system to test it... so that didn't impress me much.
It has VERY basic features... -Scan All- and -Quit- in effect. So it doesn't really rate well there either.
But, it doesn't crash my system like NortonsAV, it doesn't slow Windows down to a crawl like PC-Cillin (aka Trend Micro) does... so it's the best I am going to get until I re-install this machine.
Overall, nothing to write home about. But the Pro version (which costs, of course) sounds like a much better ticket. We shall have to see, I guess.
