Bad Island product reviews

A graphic novel.
THIS ISLAND IS UP TO NO GOOD....

When Reese is forced to go on a boating trip with his family, the last thing he expects is to be shipwrecked on an island - especially one swarming with weird plants and animals. What starts out as a bad vacation turns into a frantic adventure, as the castaways must find a way to escape while dodging the islands lethal inhabitants. With few resources, and a mysterious entity on the hunt, each secret unlocked could save them... or spell their doom.

One thing Reese knows for sure: THIS IS ONE BAD ISLAND.

Looking a bit like David Tennant's version of Doctor Who, Doug TenNapel is the creative force behind Earthworm Jim, who I always used to enjoy in my younger days. Now I see something that, for me, is totally different... something darker, stranger, and with a lot more storyline running through it. Welcome to one bad island... and nothing is as it first appears.

The usual plot elements lead into this story - family boat trip, big storm, lost at sea, wake up on distant unknown shores, all hell breaks loose as the natives are far from friendly... after that, well... let's just say it's horror meets sci-fi. Quite a different run of graphic novel to those I am used to, which don't usually blend genres as readily as this one does.

The story is pretty good, but it's the artwork that got to me the most... I *LOVED* some of the creatures! Especially the b ad guy... so clearly the bad guy from the moment you see him/her/it. The style is pretty 'laid back' with no attempt to be semi-realistic, but they all look and act like they should.

Overall, this is quite a cool book, one I am very glad I got a chance to read. It's something different that I would willingly hand on to my pre-teen son, as the violence is all implied rather than expressed in graphic terms, if you'll forgive the potential pun. The price is fairly average for a graphic novel of this size and quality, so if these are your kind of thing, or more importantly the kind of thing your kids are into, then this is a Christmas stocking-stuffer you might want to seriously consider.
