The 48-Hour Day : Working mothers tell it like it is. product reviews

Work/life balance is the greatest challenge facing Kiwi parents today. But as we strive to achieve the perfect balance, what are we forced to compromise, is it possible to get it right more often, and how might employers and policy-makers make a positive difference and help to effect change?

These are the questions Sarah Boyd confronts in THE 48-HOUR DAY, a sound and comprehensive examination of the state of working families in New Zealand today and the honest and inspiring stories of 12 working mothers, including Katherine Rich MP, Miranda Harcourt (actor), Suki Siriwardena (Manager, Technology New Zealand), Shelley Dew-Hopkins (Manawatu Federated Farmers President) and Lisa Sproat (Co-founder, JK Kids).

THE 48-HOUR DAY contains a wealth of practical information and expert advice, including details about the new parental leave provision and hot topics such as: deciding when to return to work; breast-feeding and the workplace; choosing the right childcare for your child(ren); settling young children into creche; how to cope with after-school care and the school holidays; how much supervision teenagers need; maximising part-time, full-time, contract/freelance work and job sharing. It concludes with a challenging Manifesto for Change, which suggests that the whole culture of the workplace needs to change with regard to, among others, affordable childcare, flexible working hours, improved parental rights and the institution of workplace 'kid spaces.'

These are women, working women... they are our mothers and daughters, sisters and aunts, cousins and companions... these are women who are famous, sometimes nationally, sometime only within a small group, but all equally respected for their ability to cope with a career and a family at the same time.

This book is full of the stories of women who manage to balance their working life and their family life, and manage to stay sane, prosperous and happy in the process.

With hints and anecdotes, comparisons and interviews with the childen too, this book covers all the bases, giving a far better perspective on what it means to be a working mother in today's world.

Overall, if you find yourself spending all your time and energy on just making it through the day, this book is for you. You are bound to find something that rings true with your life, and maybe find that way out of the rat-trap, the way to find balance, and perhaps even some time to relax again.
