I am a meat lover. and I was surprised to find this frozen meal had one thicker slab of meat instead of several thin, perfectly circular pieces. Providing a thicker cut of meat, forced me to have to actually cut the meat into chunks and made it feel more like a meal that I would have made myself.
The perfect accompaniment to a pepper steak roast is roast potatoes, but with the length of time it takes to make perfect baked potatoes, I had little hope for these ones. They ended up coming out a tad rubbery and dry inside, joining the list of frozen potatoes that have failed to meet my expectations.
The vegetables were well cooked, all perfect looking and brightly coloured, with a great texture, that was soft, but still held together well. The gravy sauce that was included in this meal was more than generous, and is necessary for frozen meals, to survive the heating process. In the end there was more than enough sauce to cover my vegetables, meat and potatoes.
A cheap meal, which makes up for the tiny portion size, that left me unsatisfied. This meal is pretty good, but if you a larger person, you may need to invest in two of them.
When we are feeling lazy but wanting to eat properly, we get a selection of the McCain's Healthy Choice meals for one. One of the things I like about doing this is, the price is not too bad for a single meal. It would cost more than that to go to a working man's club for a similar meal. You get vegetables and meat and a gravy as well. The other thing I like is that I can have what I want and he can eat something that appeals to him. Often the things I like, he tolerates and vice versa.
This Pepper Steak was a flavour we both thought sounded nice. We enjoy Pepper Steak pies so we were both keen to try this one. The sight of the broccoli was a bit off-putting to my husband. But we cooked both up and then I swapped some of my carrot and potato for his broccoli and we both got a meal that suited us.
The meal itself was not as big as shown in the photo, but then that is always a bit of a given. The vegetables were firm, but cooked. It was as if they had been steamed. The potatoes were really nice and the gravy wasn't too gluggy. The peppery flavour was good, and not too spicy. Overall I was happy with the meal. It was filling, though if I had been making it myself we would have more meat. Still it has a heart tick which would be affected if there was more meat on the plate.
It was on special, I couldn't be bothered with the dishes, so a frozen meal was an easy out.
It looked, and sounded, rather tasty, and in an uncommon act of accurate packaging, was actually as appealing as it looked on the box. Smelled so good while I was cooking it, that by the time I got it cooled to eating point, it was mostly gone anyways. :)
A truely more'ish meal... quite the trend-breaker.
Overall... anytime. :)
