Imagine the possibilities of a world without humans. What survives when we cease to exist? The visually stunning and thought-provoking documentary Life Without People, the most watched program in the history of THE HISTORY CHANNEL in the USA, answers these questions.
What would happen to planet earth if the human race were to suddenly disappear forever? Would ecosystems thrive? What remnants of our industrialised world would survive? What would crumble fastest? From the ruins of ancient civilisations to present day cities devastated by natural disasters, history gives us clues to these questions and many more in the visually stunning and thought-provoking special Life After People.
Using feature film quality visual effects and top experts in the fields of engineering, botany, ecology, biology, geology, climatology and archaeology, Life After People provides an amazing visual journey through the ultimately hypothetical. The 1986 nuclear power plant accident at Chernobyl and its aftermath provides a riveting and emotional case study of what can happen after humans have moved on. The ghostly silence and decay of this once thriving city brings to light just how temporary our modern-day structures can be.
Life After People goes to remote islands off the coast of Maine to search for traces of abandoned towns, beneath the streets of New York to see how subway tunnels may become watery canals, to the Montana wilderness to divine the destiny of the bears and wolves. Humans won't be around forever, and now we can see in detail, for the very first time, the world that will be left behind in Life After People.

Now this is something to put on when you are feeling a little too full of your own self-importance. its a real ego-shrinker with no excuses and no pandering to the vanity we all hold within us. Humans are, in the greater scheme of things, far more of a destructive influence on this planet and our potential for disaster far outweighs any 'manifest destiny' we feel we have. This doco, though utterly hypothetical and full of speculation, does point to the realisation that even our mightiest achievements can be destroyed by the forces of nature in a relatively short (by geologic standards) period of time by even the most tiny of critters.
My humanity is intact enough to want to have pride in the power of our minds and the dexterity of our opposable thumbs, but even so I see how much damage we are doing and I too have wondered "would the planet be better off if we simply sat down and died?"
This thought is explored in great detail throughout this documentary. With snippets of interviews with people of all walks of life, including sci-fi authors, engineers and scientists from a wide range of fields, there is information and thought provoking stuff in here for everyone.
I cant really go into a lot of detail as there was simply too much to take in. Information compressed to such a high degree doesnt lend itself to casual summarising but what I can say is that if you are a thoughtful person and want an idea of what you can do to help ease the burden we are placing on the planet, or just need a bit of a reailty-check to remind you of your real place on the tree of life, then this is something you should watch.
