Oh how I would love to have a camcorder that wrote straight to disc, but alas mine only writes to MiniDV tapes... however, once I have used something like Adobe Premiere, then I need some place to store the movies. Now, sometimes short movies, like my son's birthday Treasure Hunt, or his performance in the school play, aren't big enough to warrant a normal DVD-R disc, but are too big for a CD... and CD's wouldn't be playable in the players the rest of the extended family own.
That's where these came into their own. With 1.4gb of storage space, they will happily hold a 15 minute movie at top quality, or about half an hour of movie at normal compression. This is plenty for those small projects, and to really improve their 'useability', at 8cm diameter, they can be sandwiched between some firm carboard and posted in a standard envelope! How nifty is that! So long as you use REALLY stiff card, they can survive quite well! (Yes, I posted one to myself to test the theory, and the disc arrived a round trip from Palmerston North, to Auckland, to Christchurch and back to Palmy fully intact!)
Printability was stunning, as is to be expected. Sharp, clear, crisp lines and edges, minimal bleeding (if any at all) and colours stayed sharp and bright after the ink dried... which nwas remarkably fast. I am used to having to sit a disc aside for up to 10 minutes to let the ink set totally dry before I put it in the caddy/folder/case/spindle, but not these ones. 2 minutes and they were bone dry... probably less, but it took me 2 minutes to set up and print each one before I could check them.
Overall, an excellent 'mini solution' for your video storage needs, and I daresay they would be just as useful if you didn't want to waste storage and postage for smaller jobs. My only niggle is the rather slow write speeds. Sure, a camcorder may only burn at 4-speed, but these can be used in any normal DVD-R drive as well, so why not use the higher-speed dyes? When 16-speed is quite common, 4-speed is strangely slow.
