I'm definitely a big fan of the Kaweka range in general, and I certainly love both Venison and Mushroom - but this is not one of my favourites. Whilst I had a reasonable serving of both meat and mushroom in this stew I felt the taste was lacking a little oomph. Rather than making a stunning impression like others in the range it sort of lingered in the 'just another stew' category. I could definitely taste the red wine, but it seemed to lack that distinctive venison taste. The meat was, however, extremely tender, and the mushrooms were quite tasty. I do think the servings need to be either a little larger or a little smaller to be either a one or a two as at the moment I think it is about one and a third.
All in all I think it could use a bit of development, but the base is certainly very sound.
This was the meal that I was most looking forward to...
I love venison!!! and am a big fan of mushrooms to, so we couldn't really go wrong with this meal - or so I thought....
I have to admit to being a little disappointed with some areas of this meal... While the venison was very tasty, and the mushrooms were definitely there to taste, I was left wanting by the quantity of the portions.
We ate this meal with baked potatoes, yams, parsnip and some steamed veges, and I have to say that if we didn't have all those veges, we may well have gone hungry - the 1-2 serving size on the packet was more a 1 than a 2.
There also seemed to be a lot more gravy than meat and mushrooms than I had anticipated - I think I only got 1 decent sized piece, and the rest were very small (my partner says it was more like shredded venison and I have to agree).
The sauce was tasty however, with honey and red wine definitely making their presence felt. It would have been nice if the sauce was a little thicker though...
Overall, I would have to say that this was a tasty meal, but not the best I've eaten from the Kaweka range.
I have always been a fan of mushrooms and, when they are added to ANY red meat dish, so much the better. This meal appealed to me most because of the use of a red wine and beef stock gravy.
When I removed the packet from the microwave, the smells were amazing. There was the strong odour of venison mixed with a hint of the red wine. The meat was very tender and juicy and the mushrooms had plenty of bite to them as well. However, I did find that the gravy was a little thin to serve it the way I did - au natural. I am sure that rice would have soaked up most of the sauce.
Overall, an enjoyable meal and enough in the packet to provide a good meal for two, with additions. Good call, Kaweka.
I love mushrooms and when I can manage it i quite like a bit of nice low fat venison whenever I can get it so it was with some excitement that I popped this latest offering from Kaweka into the microwave and nuked it for the recommended time. The aroma from this meal was delightful and you could quite clearly detect the venison and the mushrooms.
Seeing as I am the only person in the household that actually likes mushrooms it was a heavy burden that was placed upon me to try this (Yeah Right!), I decided to try this disk au natural to get the most flavour from the dish, and flavour I got, this dish is wonderful in the taste area, the venison is just right, it didn't have that strong gamey taste that venison can so easily have and the mushrooms perfectly complimented the meal.
The meat was just the right tenderness and it definitely had the melt-in-the-mouth factor going for it, and the mushrooms were of the perfect consistency as well.
I will definitely be getting more of these, however next time I will steam up som rice to go with it and then freeze half the meal for when I need something quick and easy, but still really great tasting.
I don't usually eat venison, so it was up to my partner to try this one. Being a big venison fan, he was more than happy to offer!
This pick from the Kaweka range smelled great when it came out of the microwave. It looked a little plain, but there's not a lot you can do about that considering the ingredients.
With rice, this was enough for a very hearty lunch for a hungry man, but no doubt would have easily streched to feed two people.
There was plenty of venison in the meal, and the sauce to meat to mushroom ratio was perfect. The meat was tender and flavourful. The comments I received were that it tasted good, but not as impressive as some of the range has been. This could be personal taste however, as although my partner loves venison, mushrooms don't really top his favourite list. The quality of the ingredients however was superb.
So, overall for us, we probably wouldn't buy this one again - owing to personal flavour preferences.

What makes our tuna pockets taste so good? It's the fusion of real ingredients. So you get to enjoy the taste of Asia with Tuna, lemon, ginger and sesame. All gently slow cooked to lock in the flavour.
