I was excited to get my hands on a new Karen Miller novel after enjoying the first two of her books so much (Innocent Mage & Innocence Lost) and was not disappointed with this new addition to her collection...
However if you have read Innocent Mage and Innocence Lost, do not go into this book thinking it will be similar. It is NOT!!!
This book is grittier, darker and has much less of the giggle inducing writing that the first books had.

Do not think however, that this makes 'Empress of Mijak' any less of a good read!

I will admit to normally choosing books that are lighter and have a bit of humour in them, but I thoroughly enjoyed this offering with its gritty nature.

Hekat is a young girl, taken from a life she despised by men who she thought valued her as a person. Upon discovering that the only reason they actually valued her was the money she would bring when sold into a rich man's harem, she takes charge of her destiny, runs away and joins the Warlord Raklion's army as one of the most talented knife-dancers that the city has ever seen.

Almost from the moment she enters into the barracks of the army, Raklion notices her and feels himself tugged towards her inexplicably... Hekat, knowing herself to be precious and godchosen, pushes her way through the boundaries that society has placed on her and becomes Raklions wife and the mother of the new warlord - Zandakar - with some help from Vortak...

Hekat's devotion to her son, Mijak and her god are not unrewarded... However, life for Hekat is not all honey and roses. There are many trials and tribulations that face her and those around her... including the birth of her second son, Dmitrak.

With the conquering of Mijak and then the godless lands, Hekat and those nearest to her must go through many tests... leading to the completely unexpected!!!

This is a great read and a novel that Karen Miller should be proud of! Well done on a great new book!!!
