These meals never manage to get the potatoes right. They either come out rubbery, or uncooked. Even with they had the potato 'mash' it was dry, or floury. But I have yet to find a frozen meal, that has succeeded in providing suitable potatoes. The vegetables on the other hand were incredibly sweet, and the peas had a much stronger minty taste, than I can usually get from a tin. The carrots were cooked thoroughly, but still had texture to them.
The meat was tasty, and came with enough gravy to bathe the entire meal, so nothing was dry. The meat was meat shaped, and no longer a perfect circle in shape, but was unfortunately a tiny portion for a man my size, so despite the enjoyable flavour, I was left wanting more. I have on several occasions eaten two of these meals at once.
So overall, the meal needs more meat, and less potatoes (at least until they can perfect them), and the vegetables are just right. It is good to have more meals these days with the Heart Foundation 'tick', but they should make some meals with larger portion sizes, for those people with larger appetites.
Ah McCain, you've done it again!
This is another flavour of the Healthy Choice range that was a hit in our house. I enjoy lamb for dinner, but whenever I roast lamb it always comes out overcooked or sitting in oil and grease. So I was keen to have that taste of lamb without the bucket of fat that seems to come with it. This Healthy Choice meal comes with potatoes, baby carrots and beans. I think that was a good mix. It's very much meat and three vege, but hey I didn't have to cook the whole thing from scratch!
I found the vegetables were cooked as if steamed. None of them had gone to that really watery, overcooked state that I can sometimes manage even in the microwave. The gravy was really nice and while there was not enough lamb for me, I think that it was a good serving size. The fact it has the heart tick as well means a lot to me. I try to make healthy choices and that's what this is.
For the size of the meal and the convenience that it gives, these are great. We have a chest freezer and I would happily buy more of these to stock that freezer for nights where we really can't be bothered cooking but we want to be healthy as well in the dinner choice we make.
After the success of a previous meal I thought it worth trying a few other Healthy Choice meals. Glad I picked this one, it was yummy.
The carrots were firm to the bite (something I quite like, but my partner doesn't) but everything else was top-notch, well above the average for frozen meals! The lamb cutlets were tender, with minimal gristle, meaning that it could be cut with a relatively blunt knife, making it safe for the kiddies to eat with their tools.
My only adverse comment... the lamb was cut very thin. Can understand it, but it would have been nice to have thicker slices.
