The Smell of the Moon product reviews

This book isn't Lord of the Rings, but it is a quest; it's not Roots, but it is a story about the difficult and joyous search for your origins; and it's not Gilligan's Island, but it is set on an island paradise. The Smell of the Moon celebrates a return to humanity, to family and community, to a place where your senses can live large ... where you can smell the moon!

In The Smell of the Moon American Samoan novelist Lemanatele M. Kneubuhl tests the sparkling waters of making bold lifestyle changes and he jumps into the deep end of the blue Pacific Ocean. If you've never flirted with the idea of chucking it all in for the good life then you'll enjoy this whimsical, satirical and wise take on trading it all in for a slice of paradise.

The Smell of the Moon, is, as the description says, a whimsical and satirical tale. Each page is full to overflowing with wit, wisdom, whimsy and acute satire all melded into one highly readable book.

Each character is well written, their quirks and foibles as clear to me as the people who surround me. The island is brought to life in a rich and charismatic fashion - the sight, the smells and the people are clear to the reader. The wit and satire is keenly observed, and the wisdom is homespun and, well, wise...

The narrative is relaxed set very much to the rhythm of 'Island time', a book to be enjoyed, read without hurry. A book that conjures up the very image of a tropical escape and relaxed living. The relaxed nature of the writing is a joy to read, and yet while relaxed, it carries the reader forward from page to page without the feeling of being rushed. Each word, each sentence, each page and each chapter is to be slowly savoured in a lazy fashion and digested slowly and fully rather than devoured in an indigestable torrent of words to dull the senses.

Take time to relax... Take time to smell the Gardenias, take time to smell the moon.... I did.
