My eldest son has had an interest in fishing since he was about 3 years of age, and we used to go on extended family fishing trips, and he enjoyed the thrill of someone catching a fish and the excitement of reeling the catch in. Over the last year or so he has developed an interest in spearfishing since watching his father go out and watching some New Zealand spearfishing and diving videos. The species that are caught around where we live are predominantly Blue Cod and Green Bone fish.

Recently at school my son has been studying the sea life that can be found around our local region, when I saw this book available to request, I thought that it could tie in quite nicely to his current topic. When the book arrived, we were both quite surprised how thick the book is, I think we were both surprised how many different fish there are available in little old New Zealand!

As we made our way through the book there were stunning, vivid photographs of each species and a large number of facts relating to that particular species. With each description there is also a map of New Zealand which highlights where the specific species can be located in New Zealand. My son was surprised at the sheer number of different ones that were available up in the North Island, especially around the Far North area, I told him this would most likely be because the water up there is warmer than where we live down in the South Island.

This book would be a good read for a keen fisherman, or just someone that is intrigued to find out more facts about the different species that can be found in your area, also finding out what they eat, and what predators are in that particular area. We are now on a mission to see how many fish we can find in our little area, and then will venture out on the boat further out to sea to see what we can find, I also believe a trip up north will be on the cards too! This book has been designed so that the reader can easily digest the information without being overwhelmed with too much detail or large confusing words. Once my son has finished with this and finding the fish he wants, we will of course be donating this to the local school so next time they do their sea life projects this will come in handy.
