Quacks of Quedlinburg has been a firm favourite of mine since I picked up a copy of the base game. When I saw this available in NZ and that this expansion lets you take it from a four player game to a five player game, I knew that I needed to grab it. Herb Witches adds a few new bits and bobs to the game which, in my opinion, far improves the base game. There is a new pumpkin token which counts as a 6, rather expensive but can be very helpful. As someone who often reaches the end of the pot, the new overflow pot means that you can keep drawing out tokens (so long as you don't explode) and gain extra points for them - just points, no abilities for them.
Each token also came with another recipe, which adds to the variation of the game - for a quicker start just pick one at random. A new ingredient, Locoweed, can be very helpful as it mimics the previously placed token both in ability and value. Then there are the witches themselves, everyone starts the game with a coin for each witch (one of each colour is chosen) which you can spend at any point during the game in order to reap the benefits of that witch. Since each coin can only be used once this does mean some planning is required but you also don't want to leave it too late for its value to really be of use.
I don't often bother with expansions but I found that this one really added weight to an already great game and I can't see us playing without the expansions anymore.
