The Lighthouse Princess product reviews

Proud to promote NZ productsThe 2021 Storylines Gavin Bishop Award-winning picture book is a delightful contemporary fairytale about an independent princess, who looks after a very special lighthouse lamp, fishes off the balcony and goes swimming with seals.

"Do you need rescuing from this tower?" he asked her.
"No," she said, "I like it here."

The Lighthouse Princess is almost perfectly happy. She takes care of the light that keeps ships at sea safe, catches fish off the balcony and swims with penguins and seals.

But one day, a little fishing boat with green sails sets out just as a storm blows up...

One doesn't usually pop a princess in a lighthouse, so I gave this one a quick read when it arrived in store. It is a delightful story about a young princess who lives all alone in a lighthouse, one day she sees a boat in trouble and rescues the sole passenger who asks her if she needs to be saved, which she doesn't. An ex-coworker got a copy for her niece, who was delighted with a princess with "dark hair and who could wear socks" and to be honest, this one really has been an easy sell (and is up for a NZ book award!).

For me though, aside from a great story, is the illustrations, they really are the winner in this case (in my opinion) and I really feel that they will encourage readers to come back and look closer. There are many neat things to spot, like the fishbowl on a boat, a flying chocolate fish (got to throw in the kiwi connections!), and if I remember correctly even The Beehive is hiding away in one of the pictures. I ended up encouraging my mum to borrow this from the library and she really liked it too. The Lighthouse Princess really is a delightful book, good story and great illustrations, can't go wrong with this one.

Written by Colm Toibin

Product image for The MagicianWhen the Great War breaks out in 1914, Thomas Mann, like so many of his fellow countrymen, is fired up with patriotism. He imagines that the Germany of great literature and music, which had drawn him away from the stifling, conservative town of his childhood, might be a source of pride once again. But his flawed vision will form the beginning of a dark and complex relationship with his homeland, and see the start of great conflict within his own ... more...
