Black Spiral #2 - Lone Wolf product reviews

Proud to promote NZ productsThe second riveting book in the fast-paced Black Spiral trilogy.

Back from Germany and the assignment that went horribly wrong, Violet doesn't know who to trust:
It's fortunate for me that the Foundation staff can't read my thoughts... If they could read my thoughts, they'd never let me go. I'd be a liability, and I know what happens to liabilities.

Phoenix is equally adrift:
For an hour I will forget who I am, what I have done... But... I will wake with the heavy knowledge that I am the Black Wolf, never to be trusted, never to be loved - because the only people I've ever loved are either dead or hate my guts.

The only thing both of them know for sure is that they have to escape the Foundation's clutches...

Lone Wolf is an excellent follow-up to Violet Black. In this book we switch between the viewpoints of Violet and Phoenix. This book deals with a lot more issues than the previous book did, there is medical manipulation, drugs, sex, assault, PTSD... Violet and Phoenix are both trying to come to terms with the final events of the first book, struggling to get back on their feet mentally and both beginning to see more and more through the Foundation's lies and not liking what they see, especially when new teens are brought in. Together, the two decide that they are going to make a run for it, try to escape the Foundation and spread the word about what is happening.

Whilst the themes are well known (secret organizations, the intentional infection of people, aversion therapy etc.) the book moves at a good pace and really delves into what these teens are capable of doing, especially when they start working on and enhancing their abilities. There are a few well placed characters and moments which are a little too convenient but necessary to move the plot along. Everything starts to set up for the third book in the trilogy and whilst I don't think I would ever re-read these, I really am looking forward to reading the next installment in the series.
