My husband is the spice and heat flavour loving resident in our family, and always complains that things are never hot enough, so I thought it would be good to get a self confessed spice lover to try the Baxter's Chilli Lime Hot Sauce. When it arrived he was very intrigued, first up wondering how much of the lime juice tart would come through, or whether the jalapeno spice would simply take over, so without even waiting for a dinner dish to use this with, he made himself a snack of cheese and crackers, with a dash of hot sauce for the flavour kick. When asked how it tasted, the fullness of the mouth and the mumble of trying to fit another one in said it all. Once he finished those, I asked for more of a review that I could actually publish, as hmmmmm hmmmmm mmmmmm isn't really that great!
When asked to describe the flavour of the sauce, he said it is tangy and tart, hot but not too firey all at the same time. He said it reminded him of a kind of salsa crossed with sweet chilli sauce, in both the taste and the consistency. It doesn't pour our of the bottle all liquid, rather it has a distribution that enables you don't add too much at once and over heat your meal and your mouth.
This is the sort of sauce that can be used with many dishes, and foods and in many ways to add that spice or heat factor. I love that hubby can add it to the same meal cooked for the kids to take it to his level of fire-ness, but can also stir it through rice with some ham and veggies and it works just as well. Fries with this were apparently absolutely delicious! Will look at buying more of this, but with a little going a long way, it will last a, while. Will be trying some more flavours too!
When I saw this up for review my first thought was chicken! Images of little chicken drumsticks or wings popped up, for some reason in an American bar. I am not a huge fan of hot sauces but the medium won me over. Also lime just seemed rather exotic and the cover of the bottle looked rather exciting.
We had home made potato and onion fritters last weekend and also they popped with the black pepper I felt like it needed an extra kick, so I splashed a few drops on to the plate. Firstly I was met with this lovely capsicum smell, secondly I was surprised that it did not pour out but instead dribbled as I shock the bottle. The taste was sweeter than I was expecting and did not taste as hot as I was worried about. The taste also didn't taste anything like I expected more of a sweet chilli sauce with capsicum in it - I did not pick up any of the lime.
Today for lunch I had some chicken legs so I splashed some of the sauce on the chicken and roasted for 30 minutes, took the chicken out splashed with some more sauce and turned the chicken over and coated the base of it. Thirty minutes later it had a nice glaze to it. I was surprised with how much flavour came thru, as in all honestly even though I had splashed it, I hadn't actually used much at all - maybe a quarter of a bottle. Usually you only taste the marinades / sauces on the skin but this had actually gone thru to the actually meat.
This is the sort of sauce that can really be used on numerous dishes, just to spice it up. I am thinking would be great on meatloaf or some cold meats. Even loaded wedges with sour cream would be a hit - basically any Mexican dish or dishes that include capsicum flavour. The heat is completely acceptable and the taste is explosive. A little really does go a long way.
My husband has tried most of Baxter's sauces and loves their Dragon's Breath BBQ sauce so much that I ended up buying him a 5-litre tub of it! He was excited when he saw the bottle of Chili Lime as every Baxter's sauce has been a big hit. The sauce comes in a 150ml glass bottle with pictures of limes and chilis on the front. It claims to be Medium Hot and on further investigation, the label says it's made out of New Zealand Jalapenos and Santa Fe chili peppers. It also won a silver medal in the Mr. Chilli Awards in Australia.
The sauce looks quite runny in the bottle and there is a dripper lid that controls the amount you use. My hubby put a liberal amount on his plate with some wedges and said that it was very tasty. He said you could definitely taste the lime and that he didn't think it was too hot, more of a 'beginner' hot sauce! My 12-year-old and 14-year-old daughters both tried it and said that it wasn't too spicy and the lime helped to negate any heat. I am not a spicy sauce person and hate any sauce that destroys my taste buds and leaves me gasping for pints of mild. After lots of assurance, I decided to try this with some cheese and crackers. Although it was spicy hot for me, it wasn't as hot as I'd imagined and I wasn't left in any pain! There was a strong lime taste that helped.
My hubby has used this with wedges, crisps, potatoes, cheese and crackers, lasagna, well, pretty much anything I put in front of him. It's a very versatile and flavoursome sauce that would be great for people wanting something spicy but not wanting to lose all sense of taste afterward!
Anyone who knows me well knows I love my hot sauces and I have tried a great range of different sauces over the years and have come accustomed to the bold unique flavors these sauces have. The first time I tried one of Baxter's sauces was when wendys had the promotion on with the dragon's breath BBQ sauce on one of their burgers and immediately after that, I sought out to get a bottle for myself. Since then I have collected other sauces in the Baxters range and I have come to find they use quality ingredients that provide a superb flavor and lovely heat.
When it comes to trying out hot sauces my go-to dish is chicken wings coated in the sauce so that is exactly what I had to try with the Baxters Chili Lime sauce so I open the bottle up and smothered the chicken nibbles with the sauce in a bowl and then cooked them up. The flavor was delicious with a lovely zest from the lime and a light spiciness from the Jalapeno and Santa Fe Chilis that are in the sauce blend. I ended up adding more sauce to the chicken nibbles once it was cooked as I found the baking dampens the heat once it is cooked and this added more punch to the flavor having it fresh on the wings and mini drums.
I really love the flavor of this sauce with its smokiness and citrus flavor and the next meal I will use it on will be with tacos as it suggests on the label to add extra lime juice and a pinch of paprika to give it an amazing Mexican inspired hot sauce which I would love to put to the test. If you like hot sauces then this is a must-try sauce and I can see it suiting an amazing range of meals with its flavor. My youngest son also loves hot sauces given that they are only mild in heat range and he gave this sauce a massive seal of approval plus it is locally made in New Zealand, Gluten-Free, and vegan friendly so it really caters to a broad range of those that can have it.
Baxters original chilli lime sauce was one of the yummiest sauces I have had with these flavour combos. Tthe bottle says its a medium to hot sauce but I found it was not overly spicy or hot and it was such a great flavour to add to our meals. We took this away camping and the bottle takes up hardly any space in the chilly bin and would sit on the table at dinner time. All of my friends and family and the teenage kids added it to their burgers and wraps and it made easy meals well camping become tasty treats.
The Sauce has such a great flavour to it and also its great that it's gluten-free so one of the teenage girls who can't have gluten, she loved being able to add the sauce to her to her meals at dinner time. Even though it got used a lot over three nights of camping and three lots of meals with about nine adults and three teenagers the sauce has still got just under half a bottle left so I feel like it's great value for your money and you get a lot of use from the one bottle.
I definitely would be recommending this to friends and family and I can't wait to see this on the shelf at my local supermarket so I can buy it for home. Its also great that it is a locally made New Zealand product the picture on the front of the bottle is good, you can see the chilies and you can see the lime and it says three for hotness I didn't find overly hot but then again our family likes hot food, but no one else really complained that it was too hot it was just right for everybody so it was great.
My son-in-law and I are both fans of hot sauces, so we opted to test this sauce together. As a family, we would be dining together several times over the course of a week, so this gave us ample time to try it in a variety of ways. We just made sure to add a milder sauce to the table as well so that the less adventurous family members would not feel left out.
We started by tasting a couple of drops straight from the bottle. Here was the first surprise: it was not excessively hot; we even got Mr 9 to try it, and he said he might like it if he used it sparingly on his meat. The lime flavour is quite strong, something we both appreciated. The chili, on the other hand, was a lot less aggressive than we had expected. It is advertised on the label as being medium hot, and I would agree with that; sometimes the information provided is misleading, but this was totally accurate.
We had barbecued steak and salad for dinner that first night. I added a small amount to the side of my plate - probably half a teaspoon - but found I needed to add more as it was not only a perfect accompaniment for the meat but also added zing to the salad. My son-in-law was more adventurous; he shook it liberally over his entire meal. We compared notes and agreed that it was something we would be interested in trying again. Even Mr 9 added a little to his steak, and said it was ok if a little different from his regular tomato ketchup of choice.
We had a very early scratch dinner the following evening as we were off to a show, so it was a matter of raiding the freezer for items that could be prepared at short notice. There were precooked sausages and a rather boring sliced white loaf, so the children organised the plates, placing the hastily heated sausages on bread halves and filling the middle of each plate with a mushroom and avocado salsa. They also added two drops of sauce to each sausage piece, but I added more; it was not enough!
Our final sample was with our after-show coffee when we arrived back home. Both my son-in-law and I drink our coffee black, with no added milk or sweetener, so the sauce had only one flavour to compete with. I have added chili sauce to coffee in the past, but not with the extra lime element, so I was interested to see if the combination would work. It did! We could not discern the sauce at all, but agreed that the coffee tasted richer and smoother with the addition of just two drops. Now I am interested in seeing whether it will go with cocoa (which I also drink black).
