Black's Veterinary Dictionary has been a bestseller for over seventy years. It is an essential reference tool for all with a professional or leisure interest in the care of animals. Much more than a list of veterinary terms, its practical approach ensures that readers gain an insight into the signs and symptoms of common and less common, diseases, their diagnosis and treatment.
For the 21st edition, much new and updated information has been included. Entries on dogs and cats and the conditions that may affect their health have been extended. Details of the Pet Travel Service, which has largely replaced quarantine for dogs and cats, have been updated; the re-emergence of old problems such as bovine tuberculosis and new ones such as avian flu, are among the thousands of topics covered.
About the Author : Edward Boden is a former editor of The Veterinary Record. He was founding editor of In Practice, the BVA's journal of continuing professional development.

Black's is one of those books that can never be replaced - only updated when needed. The world of science is a vastly different place to what it was in 1928 when Blacks was first published; and has needed updating and additions since the twentieth edition was published almost five years ago - and what changes there have been in five years - bird flu' is but one example.
Black's is clearly laid out in alphabetical, dictionary cum encyclopaedic fashion. It can be picked up and read as a matter of interest to anyone who has a connection with animals, or used as a reference book for specific animal health queries - making Black's an indispensible volume for the veterinarian, the veterinary nurse, the stockman, or anyone involved in animal husbandry - or simply anyone with an interest in animals.
The updated version includes covering animal breeds and the conditions to which they are vulnerable; details of pet travel laws; old problematic diseases that are making a comeback and the newly discovered exotic diseases. This volume is comprehensively illustrated with clear and simple line drawings in some areas, and clear black and white photographs to illustrate other areas.
As a veterinary dictionary, so far there have been 21 editions in less than 80 years, with the bulk of those editions since 1953. Do expect this edition to date quickly and be replaced by a newer edition, however this edition will never be redundant in your bookshelves: expect a lot of use from this edition of Black's.
