I never got into My Little Pony, before or after their big cosmetic changes but my youngest discovered them one day when watching cartoons on TV and became hooked. Considering how many films she had sat through for her siblings and myself I knew that I would be dragging myself to the movie theater when it came out and no doubt buying it on DVD (which, of course, is what ended up happening). Knowing a little about the characters helps you follow along but it does well as a stand along film, so you can enjoy it without having to watch any of the series first.
I didn't find the plot anything amazing, it didn't inspire me to sit down and watch the series, it didn't have me eagerly awaiting a re watch but it did at least provide a fun enough way to pass ninety-six minutes of my life. When we went to this, it wasn't too long after the public had been informed that Emily Blunt was going to be our new Mary Poppins which I was dubious about, but hearing her sing as Tempest put me at ease. Tempest was easily a villain that I could enjoy, in fact my little miss really wanted a big toy of her but we never saw any come out, which was a shame (I know someone else who was the same with Capper, no decent toys).
This film follows along with the usual My Little Pony themes, which predominantly is friendship, but also being able to forgive and embrace those who are different. Kindness is a huge theme for this series, so even though it might drive me bonkers, I don't mind my youngest and their addiction to the series. The plot moved along, I didn't find myself getting too bored and the songs were enjoyable enough that I didn't mind hearing them being warbled away by miss eight.
