The Innocent Mage product reviews

Enter the Kingdom of Lur, where magic is wielded by few... and others are imprisoned if they dare try.

The Doranen have ruled Lur with magic since arriving as refugees centuries ago, having fleed Morg, the mage who started a war in their homeland. To keep Lur safe, the Olken inhabitants agree to abandon their own magic. Magic is forbibben them, and any who break this law will be executed.

Asher left his coastal village to make his fortune in the city. At first employed in the royal stables, he soon finds himself befriended by Prince Gar and given more money and power than he'd ever dreamed possible.

But the Olken have a secret; a prophecy. The Innocent Mage will save Lur from destruction and members of The Circle have dedicated to preserving Olken magic until the saviour arrives. Unbeknownst to Asher, the has been watched closely. As the Final Days approach, his life takes new and unexpected turns...

Having long been a reader of the fantasy genre, I am always happy when I find a new author who catches my imagination with a good story...
And this is such an author with a wonderful tale that entranced me from the start.

Ms Miller has created a new world for the fantasy reader to explore... Lur.

Lur is the home to the Olken, the original inhabitants of the country, and the Doranen, who came with magic and sealed Lur from the rest of the world to create a safe haven for both the Olken and themselves. In doing so though, the Olken had to give up the ancient magic, the earth magic, that they possessed, and this is the story of Asher, a simple fisherman who wants to make his place in the world a little better, who is much more than a simple fisherman if truth be told... he is the Innocent Mage, only he doesn't know that as yet.

Asher heads to the city to better his fortunes, with a dream of his own fishing boat, one he doesn't have to share with his 6 brothers. When he arrives in the city he is 'helped' by Dathne - a member of the Circle - to find employment in Prince Gar's stables.
Prince Gar is the eldest son of the ruling family, but he will not be the ruler of Lur, as he is Magicless, a cripple in the eyes of most Doranen. So instead he takes on the day to day running of many aspects of the nation.
A friendship springs between Gar and Asher, and Asher's fortunes grow in leaps and bounds as he becomes not only Gar's best friend, but the Assistant Olken Administrator...

All is not well in Lur though, strange things are happening, Dathne is dreaming dark dreams of terrors to come, the King is growing weak from the weather work he does to keep the people of Lur safe and the Wall that surrounds Lur in place, Princess Fane is impatient to step up to take over from her father in these deeds, but is young, rash and not ready for the rest of the responsibilities that come with working the weather, and there is the Master Magician, who discovers an ancient diary and unleashes what the wall was created to keep out... Morg!

I read this book much too quickly for my own liking, it was over all too soon, and I am waiting impatiently for the second of Ms Millers wonderful novels...
