When it came to planning our wedding we knew that one item we wanted to splash out on was a live band. It's not often that you shell out to have a live band play at an event and this event was a special one! We had planned on visiting a few local pubs to hear some of the bands we have around Dunedin play. We had heard of Idol Frets before as they play regularly around Dunedin and are often chosen as the entertainment at public events. Good friends of our also know both Kelvin and Mike. As we were planning some more of our wedding one weekend my now husband and I got on to the topic of music. Already knowing that we like the music Idol Frets play and having heard plenty of good reviews on local wedding pages online we decided not to spend heaps of time trying to find someone and just book them.
It was easy to book them for our wedding night. I simply went to their website and filled in their contact form. Kelvin responded very quickly and before we knew it we had booked them in! Their website is simple but has all that you need to know. It was also great that they had some videos and sound files so that we could hear them. In fact, one of the sound files happened to be our first dance song, a sign that they were the best option for us! Price wise they were slightly cheaper than any other price we had seen for a live band.
When we were setting up our venue on the Thursday before the wedding Mike popped along to introduce himself and to check out the venue. It had been organised that the venue management would meet them there earlier on the Saturday for them to set up for later that night. Mike made sure to know where things could be plugged in and where we wanted them to be. This made me feel very at ease as I didn't want to worry about anything on our day!
We had booked Idol Frets from 8pm until midnight. This certainly wasn't long enough! I do wish we could have carried on through the night, apart from the fact that we were tired! Kelvin and Mike are amazing at what they do. They played our first dance song perfectly, and repeated it again as the last song of the night. They knew just what to play to get people up on the floor dancing. There was a good mix of old and new songs, and they played many of the biggest party hits. Once we hit 11pm they gathered us all on the floor and gathered up some chairs. I was wondering what was going on and before we knew it we were all participating in a game of musical chairs! This was so much fun and brought a lot of us together to enjoy the rest of the night. It came down to a battle between myself and my bridesmaid! The final round wasn't what you would normally expect either. Instead of just going straight to the chair when the music stopped we had to do a lap around the venue (which was a big rectangle room) stopping at the bar to skull a glass of water. I am happy to say that I was the champion! Kelvin presented me and my hubby with a guitar pick as the prize.
If you are searching for a live band for your own event, or just happen to see Idol Frets performing around Dunedin and/or Otago I couldn't recommend them highly enough!
