Product reviews...
Who knew popcorn could be so tasty. Such a simple thing but add strings of chocolate and cinnamon flavoured caramel and this was something I could eat for every meal. My work is very physically demanding so I don't have to worry about putting on weight no matter what I eat, as long as it's not pure fat I'll burn it off fairly quickly. So something like this is not something I have to hold off from eating, and to be honest even with the chocolate and caramel its probably a lot healthier than most of the rubbish I eat when I am stuck on night shifts on some lonely stretch of highway under construction.
$7.50 is a biut pricey for popcorn, but if you consider that you would expect to pay more than this for a smaller tub of plain popcorn at the movies, this price isn't that bad at all. We have become spoilt by the mass produced rubbish that can be made cheaply because it's loaded with cheap substitutes, artificial colourants and flavours. Taking that into account I would happily buy a bag or two of this every time I wanted to go to the movies, or to add some of the cinema vibe to a movie night at home with friends.
The only thing that stopped me giving the Portions section a full 10 is that I would really like to see bigger bags. This sized bag should be enough to share with friends but after your first mouthful you might find it hard to share.
When it comes to popcorn, we are huge lovers in our house. But...we are also very fussy when it comes to different flavours! We had in the past, settled for natural or lightly buttered because there was just nothing else to pick from. Occassionally we would try a flavoured option such as caramel. But it always tasted stale even if the packet was just bought and opened, so it often just sat in the pantry gathering dust.
Well hello churro caramel! Who would have thought to put caramel and chocolate together...on popcorn!? How have I not tried this one sooner!! I had tried the Popped Salted Caramel before at an expo and thought it was just simply the best; so delicious!! Well sorry Salted Caramel, move on over as there is a new favourite!!! The perfect amount of chocolate drizzled over top of the caramel popcorn to accompany the caramel as opposed to overpower it. It didn't all clump together like it could have if the chocolate was done overboard. I resealed half the packet and left it in the pantry for a week to see how long it would last. Still fresh when I undid the clip. Very impressed with that.
What I liked about the flavour is that it was easy to eat, yet it was also easy to get a small portion and be satisfied with a small bowlful rather than pig out on the entire bag...although it could have been tempting to start with!
Would I pay $7 for a bag? Possibly...probably!! But would I pay $7 plus postage? Simple answer is no. That is just too expensive to spend on a snack food, and the packaging doesn't live up to the price tag. So please, bring it out in shops or cafes in a more appealing package! Then I would quite happily support this New Zealand company and buy buy buy. And not just for me, it would make an awesome present for someone and introduce them to the amazing flavours.
Gourmet popcorn?! Why didn't I know about this sooner! Popcorn has become a weekly treat in our house, particularly caramel popcorn as it's a tad healthier than other sweet treats. When I saw the Popped gourmet products for review I had to request at least one of them.
On receiving the product the packaging is quite simple, clear plastic packaged with two labels - one with the company logo and contact details, the other with the product name. The packaging also has enough air in it to stop the popcorn from being crushed in transit which is great. On the downside - there is no batch date, expiry or best before date, or a weight for the packaging - which appears to be 165g according to our kitchen scales. There is also no ingredient list on the packaging.
On opening the packet and taking our first bites, it's very clear that what Popped offer, is a unique twist on a favourite treat. The Churro Caramel flavour is a sweet caramel drizzled with chocolate and has a distinct taste of cinnamon sugar. I'm quite certain they are salted as well but my fiance doesn't seem to agree. The popcorn is very sweet and hard to eat large amounts of, which is absolutely wonderful for me because I have trouble with restraint when it comes to sweet food. This product might be too sweet for some, and you have to appreciate cinnamon to enjoy it.
After visiting their website, it's amazing to see the range of different flavours available. At a price of $7 per packet I can't say I'll be buying them in future. If you're a very big fan of gourmet popcorn I highly recommend Popped, however the basic packaging and higher price tag is a deterrent. Price aside, the popcorn tasted as described - Churro Caramel! It is a heavenly combination for cinnamon lovers and those who have a sweet tooth that craves something new and exciting.
When you think back to when you were a kid and you went to the amusement park for the first time and all the excitement from the popcorn, candy floss, rides and games, when you eat this amazing Churro Caramel popcorn, these are the memories that will float back in your mind. The flavours are absolutely delicious. The hint of cinnamon, the chocolate hit, the crunch, and the caramel - wow they are just astounding. As I am sitting here eating them, well reviewing the popcorn, all I can think of is I am glad my son is at school so I donā ™t need to share with him, but also I need to stop eating them all so I can share with him when he gets home as I know he will love them, which will mean none left for me as he will steal the bag away.
I would have liked to have seen the ingredient used on the packaging and to know exactly how they are cooked. Not sure why they have not added this information on the packaging. There is one sticker on the front with the phone number and Facebook and website added, so I guess people can go look the information up for themselves. But as a mum when you do not have the time to stop and do this, it would be a hassle.
I would say these would be a luxury treat and not something to buy to snack on all the time. As yummy and amazing as they are, I would not think they would be very good for you due to the amount of goodness in each popcorn, caramel and chocolate. Without seeing the ingredients one can only assume these are high in calories. For the price of the bag it would not be an everyday lunch snack for my sonā ™s lunch box. Maybe if he has been really good on the weekend and done some jobs, then he would be rewarded with this yummy snack treat. Apart from the lack of information provided on the bag, these are truly yummy and I have to stop myself from eating the whole bag as I really want my son to try them when he comes home.
Popcorn has since become on eof my less favourite snacks due to my craving for lollies and chocolate rising to the top of my list. This popcorn renewed my love for the snack, by combining popcorn, cinnamon, and chocolate to create something quite tasty. I have never actually tried Churros myself before, so I can't compare this product against them, but now these have got me curious to try Churros, I know of a vendor in front of Center Place who sells them.
The product looked pretty nice, although I must say that the chocolate wasn't well distributed, some pieces of popcorn had more chocolate on them than others. The flavour is what I remember the most, however. The taste was sweet, the cinnamon was quite pronounced, but it wasn't too strong, and then beneath both those flavours was the familiar salty taste of the popcorn.
I didn't get the chance to test this stuff out much. I never went to any movies while I had it, and I was going to save these for bringing with me to my N.C.E.A. course, but by the end of the week I had already gotten addicted to them and had finished the bag entirely before Course had started up again. Instead I just ate these while playing Minecraft or watching movies, as I usually do with snacks, and it was then that I found these most enjoyable.
The flavour was a bit sickly sweet at some points, or I just got sick of them when I had eaten too many at a time, but otherwise the flavour was on point. The portion size was good; for the amount of money a bag of this popcorn is worth, the quantity is quite suitable. Overall, I am very happy with this product, and I highly recommend it to those other popcorn-lovers out there.
