And for all the animals sheltering underneath Madge the cow, there is no better place to be when you are caught in a Great Big, Terrible, Awful Storm.

About a month ago there was a really big storm with lots of lightning and thunder and my daughter was worried about the new little calves at our neighbours, I explained to her that the mummy cows would look after their babies and that they'd all be ok. The book really appealed to me as a way to help my daughter understand how someone can look after not only herself but others too.

The first thing I noticed about this book was the front cover showing the faces of some very scared looking animals. Then I flicked through the book and saw that the beautiful illustrations were continued throughout the book.

My kids loved the story the first time I read it and since they are really interested in cows at the moment they were amazed at what one cow can do to help all the other animals during the bad weather. My daughter thought the book was cool, she loved all the animals in it and can't wait for the next storm to see what the cows next door do. My 2 year old son's favourite part of the book was the tractors but that comes as no surprise since that's his favourite part of the farm too. Both kids wanted me to read it to them again straight away.

The main message I got from this book was to keep calm during a storm and make sure you are somewhere safe. I think this is a fantastic message to drill into young kids and the way the book promotes it is fantastic. This will definitely be placed at the top of our reading pile and will be repeated many times.

This book has been read over and over again with my 3 year old and although I was initially not a fan my son was instantly hooked. We read it through several times and spent a long time looking at the pictures my son loves tractors so he enjoyed pointing these oit. However the book is not about tractors its about Madge the cow and what a special cow she is.

On a rainy day several animals find themselves caught out in the rain but Madge the cow is a shelter providing help to all the animals. Some very unlikely characters join under Madge and Madge learns that sometimes it is good to look out for pthers. Nice messages about helping others which are subtly included in the atpey.

My 3 year old thought it very funny that the animals stood under the cow and there was some humour that was perhaps a little over his head yet a s only told through the illustrations with the hedgehog rolling down the hill. I had a wee giggle but explained to my son what was going on.

Very unlikely friendships form under a cow and we even get a little sing along mid book which I had to try and figure out how to get in a tunr my son found this hilarious. All in all a good book and one I think we will be reading for a while in this house as it gkt the bih thumbs up from my son.
