Disney on Ice - Dare to Dream started with a couple of warm up skaters, their act was brilliant and if it was a sign of things to come we were in for a good show. After that the thing that struck me was that we were watching the last show of the New Zealand leg of their tour, the third show of the day, and yet the performers were still remarkably fresh. I am aware that this show is scripted for an international audience however I feel the first story in New Orleans was probably a little lost on most Kiwis although the performance was brilliant, a lot of large group choreography which could easily have gone wrong a number of times.
The show was made up of four stories and a finale, each was introduced by Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Donald Duck, it would have been nice to see more of them but they did their job as emcees well and helped the show flow nicely. After our trip to New Orleans we were treated to the abridged version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. The stand out in this act would have to be the Magic Mirror, as it was moving around you expected to see to a person pushing it, yet there wasn't, the graphics on it were amazing as well. The UV costumes nearer the beginning were stunning and it would have been nice if they had been used for more of the act as they were an excellent touch.
Cinderella was next up and once again the stage hands showed off their skills, being able to skate at speed in the dark to complete near seamless prop changes allowing the story to continue along. It was in this performance near the intermission that we saw the only near miss of the entire show, where Prince Charming almost didn't pull off his jump but recovered nicely. After intermission we saw the finish of Cinderella and some very impressive skating by the Royal Guard as they went in search of her, again I was impressed there were no crashes.
We were then introduced to a flying Flynn Ryder from Rapunzel, this story followed the Tangled version of events. It was here that I saw the skating that I was expecting from the entire show, an amazing variety of lifts and spins, as well as the use of wires and silks, the skill of this pair was breath taking and I wouldn't have been disappointed if this was the only act in the show. Added to this was the horse, at first I thought it had to be another robot/remote controlled device, then I realised that there were two skaters in it, the back one of which was bent over the entire time. The team work involved in that costume alone was something that really needs to be seen to be believed.
The whole show was of course wrapped up in a no holds barred finale, everyone was dressed in whites and gold, all the characters we had seen previously were back for one final dance which was so fun and lively, everything you'd expect from Disney, including the fireworks, although we didn't get the full show, just a few token shots.
All up I felt that the show was well put together and would certainly consider going again next year, we didn't purchase any merchandise as we found it well out of our price range. It did take a little time to get to the good stuff, but when it got there it was well worth the wait. An amazing effort from all the cast and crew who obviously enjoy the work they do.
When my mum told me that she had won tickets to Disney on Ice thanks to KIWIreviews I was happy as it meant some family time. I started feeling excited about going when I saw some advertising on TV .
The costumes were amazing and the stories were cool. I really enjoyed the way the story of Rapunzel, the way the skaters danced was really worth watching. I liked the music , normally I don't like loud music but my attention was caught by the skating. I love the message that dreams can come true.I liked the individual stories and would have liked a few more to be added but not sure how well that would work as it was rather a long show.
I liked the venue. My mum didn't buy any of the merchandise as it was really over priced and since there are 3 kids it is not that affordable. I would like to go and see future Disney on Ice shows and hope that we can save a bit to buy something next time. I would recommend Disney on Ice to my friends as it is something unique and something I feel every one should experience at least once in their lives.
I was lucky enough to win tickets to Disney on Ice from KIWIreviews and I was so excited, the kids got to see a strange happy dance and wiggle as I got closer to the show. The kids only started getting excited when they saw the advertising for the show. Since traffic can be horrific I left home with plenty of time and parked near Vector Arena and had a nice walk. The themed things were slightly over priced but the kids were entertained by looking around and the bonus performance by The Auckland Figure Skating Club.
The skating was fantastic, all the moves were well choreographed with some breath taking moments. The costumes were so realistic that my 5 year old asked me how they got the horse to skate that well. The music was good and catchy, I found that the only thing that spoiled the experience was that some woman kept commenting on everything but that is not the fault of the company or skaters. I really loved Minnie's shoes.
The individual stories were short enough that the kids didn't get bored and the show was long enough that you felt like you would be getting value for money. I loved how the stories were told. The kids are already asking if we can go and watch Disney on Ice again as they loved the show, I expected a high quality from the show and am over the moon that it was delivered and would love to be able to go to future shows.
