Growing up, I was always a bit obsessed with Hey Diddle Diddle. I think because it seemed like such surreal silliness, with the cow, and the cat and dog and then of course the dish and the spoon. It's such an odd combination of characters. So when I saw this on offer, I wanted it as I was sure it will be tied into the original rhyme somehow.

Miss 3 is very much into farm animals at the moment and Miss 8 likes a bit of space exploration, so I sat them down individually and then collectively to see how the book would fly with both of them. Miss 3 was instantly enchanted by the pictures. Each page is set at night, and involves a lot of silliness but also heart-felt moments of friendship shared amongst the group. My youngest really liked all the different attempts to jump over the moon and the antics they got up to.

Miss 8 enjoyed the story, and the numerous attempts. She had her favourites, but the one that didn't sit too well with her, was the attempt that landed the cow on the sun. She was very worried that the cow would get barbequed. She let out a lot of big laughs at other pages though and overall enjoyed the book. Collectively, they encouraged imaginative play to the book. So there was a lot of pretending that each was the cow attempting to jump over the moon. Any excuse to jump on my bed! It's still a joy to see them play together so happily though, so I let them off like always.

Th hard cover on this book meant that Miss 3 could easily open the book and it would remain open for her as she flicked through the story. The price seems high, but you easily pay a bit more for a hard cover book and this one is genuinely entertaining. I think I have read it every night for the last week or so. It would also make a neat gift for birthdays or Christmas, because you know it's going to be a little more hard-wearing than a paperback picture book.

The Cow Tripped Over the Moon is my new favourite book. I saw it in a pile of books available for review and just had to have it. It is a bit more expensive than most kids books because it is a hardback but I think it will get read to death. As the title suggests this book is based on the story behind the nursery rhyme Hey Diddle Diddle. I have read this to children from 3 to 7 years old and they all wanted to say the rhyme before we could read the book.

The book has some very important messages in it. The cow didn't succeed to the first attempt it took lots of attempts. He tried and tried and tried again. Eventually he did it. There is also the importance of supporting your friends as it was their encouragement that got her to have one last try. This book was a fun way to remind the children (and adults too) of the virtues of encouragement and perseverance.

The children all loved it and my three year old was hysterical when the cow jumped over the sun. I think we were all expecting it to her to have a burnt bum but even though she didn't it was still a fun day. The same child liked to find the spoon on every page. It is written in rhyme and although it was a bit tricky the first time I read it now that I have read it a dozen times it flows nicely and the children love it.

Both the verse and the delightful illustrations make this a fun book to read to your child.
