Scream #1: The Human Flytrap product reviews

Whenever I request something from KIWIreviews and am unsuccesful at receiving it I always read the reviews from other peoples prospectives. I had originally requested this book but ended up winning it instead. Because of the reviews I was aware of what was awaiting me when you open the cover, unfortunately my three year old daughter was not and vertially jumped out of her skin when she picked it up. It has sat next to my bed for a couple of months before I could finally read it and whenever either of the girls are in my room they open the cover just to hear the (annoying) scream.

The book itself does not take long to read and is set up rather nicely. Right from the start you know things are not quite right in Axe Falls and that people and items disappear regularly or just appear. The book was great at holding my attention and you where never sure what would happen next. The action scenes where written well and you knew exactly what was happening as it is explained really well. It is definitely written for teens but as an adult I could reread this quite easily. I liked the boarders on each page as it set it apart from most books.

I think as a series this would be rather compelling as there could be all sorts of kooky things that could happen, I just hope the rest of the books don't have that 'scream' mechanism as it does get a little grating especially when you are tired and it is getting rather late, it wakes you and your husband up rather quickly.

Who remembers the good old goosebumps books that you just couldn't put down?? Jack Heath has taken me back to being a child who couldn't put the books down but had nightmares because of it. Josh lives in Axe falls and strange things happen. This book is not for the faint hearted, those with an over-active imagination and I definitely wouldn't want to read it tired or late at night. The words and description make you feel like you are there, watching things unfold. Does Lily's dad come back?

I love the fact that the despite being a paperback, that with the scream thing it is a heavier paperback. I had some minor issues with reading the last few pages as you can't bend the cover around like a normal paperback. I struggled to open the book without setting it off and found it needed to be held a certain way. I believe any pre-teen child would love this book, especially the males of the family.

The page design is great, however I am confused as to what the ants are for. They almost seem to be a page break between the chapters. Reading the cargo manifest makes me excited for more of these books to come out. I am already itching to read the second one.

First things first I just LOVE this book cover!! When I received it in the mail I picked it up without looking closely at the cover and I just flipped it open. I got a huge fright when the book then screamed at me but it's such a cool feature my niece is going to love it when I pass the book on to her to read. The whole appearance of the book also appealed to me from the interesting cover, the warning read at your own risk pages to the black boarder around each page.

Even though the book is designed for 9-13 year olds even as an adult I really enjoyed it. Reminded me a bit of the goosebump books I used to read as a teen but more updated for today's kids. Being the first in the series it sets the scene of a town where strange and unexplained things happen often. The towns people disappear and appear without explanation. After setting the scene the book then goes into the main story of a strange new house and a science experiment gone wrong.

Jack Heath does a wonderful job of writing a very interesting book which holds your attention. Once I picked it up I couldn't put it down again, which is a sign of a really good book with me because I am so busy I usually find it hard to read more than a chapter at a time before I'm putting it down and getting distracted by everything else I need to do.

I'm so glad I have number two sitting here ready to read so I don't have long to wait for the next installment and hopefully number three isn't far off as well!
