My Friend Duck is a gorgeous book about a little boy who goes to the park to feed the ducks. There is only one who becomes so attached to the boy that they become quite solid friends. It's such a sweet little story, which despite the short prose manages to squeeze in a few laughs as well.

I read this to both my eldest and youngest daughter. My eldest loved the duck and the idea of having a duck in the house. I think if she could she would absolutely have a real duck in the bath with her. My youngest liked the duck as well, and shook her head saying No when the duck was being silly. I would say her favourite bit was right at the end.

The pictures are quite muted and natural. They look to be charcoal and water colour which really suits the story. So much emotion and unspoken friendship is conveyed through the simple lines of Ben's face. There is otherwise a lot of white space which makes it easy to see the words too. The font is nice and big for early readers too. My eldest did give reading this one a go and did quite well.

My toddler traced the words with her finger and practiced flipping the pages. I asked her questions about the pictures and what she thought might happen next. She was really engaged with the book. So much so, that she tried to take it to bed. She has had it a week and this book turns up everywhere. I can always tell where she has been, because this book will be there.
