Sesame Street: Fairytale Fun product reviews

Fairy tales and nursery rhymes come to life on Sesame Street!

Mother Goose has rhymer's block can Elmo find a way to save the day? Is Oscar really the Prince of Nice in disguise? How will Hansel and Gretel replace their too-tempting-to-last cookie crumb trail? And who will help Jack Be Nimble with his 8-candlestick jump?

Miss 4.5 years loves Sesame Street and fairy tales so combining the two in Sesame Street's latest DVD Fairy Tale Fun promised to be a sure hit with her and it certainly was. Miss 6 was more interested in building with her Lego to start with but she soon moved to watch the screen. They were both glued to it until the end.

The DVD starts with Mother Goose trying to write a new rhyme but she needed help. The word she got stuck on was always a rhyming word and Miss 4.5 would shout the word to the screen. This was a fun way to promote the pre-reading skill of reading. Hansel and Gretel also has a modern twist when they leave a trail of cookie crumbs to find their way back to the subway station but realise, after Cookie Monster eats their trail, that they knew the way after all.

My favourite part was when Abby was trying to kiss Oscar (because he was green like a frog) to see if he would turn into a prince. As you can imagine The Grouch was not too keen on being kissed. For the girls their favourite part was a Guinness Book of Records style attempt by Jack to jump over a row of candlesticks. He failed and lost hope. He even suggested a change to the nursery rhyme. My daughters felt for him and were unsure if he would be able to do it but perseverance won in the end.

As a parent and experienced New Entrant teacher I love that this DVD is educational but in such a way that the children don't realise that they are learning (both academic and virtue. I don't feel guilty putting the DVD on so that I can get some jobs done.
