Buffoon doesn't look like much of a racehorse. He's awkward and ugly. But Tess senses something special in him, a hunger for success as great as her own.
Together, the unloved horse and the stubborn girl forge a bond that will take them further than anyone could have imagined.

Reading the description of this book and I just had to know more... it had me hooked before I had even begun so I should have known that this wasn't a book that would be easy to put down. I read it from start to finish in 3 days where I only read before going to bed or after first waking in the morning (in the time I sometimes get before my baby wakes) so I thought this was pretty good going. Having a pony of my own as a child and friends who spent years riding I have a sound knowledge of horses and could tell the author had the same. Definitely a book out there for any type of horse lover!
Tess is a very unique character and more than once I had to keep reminding myself she was only 12 - sometimes to the point of 'really, omg, would a 12year old really do this or that'... Then again, she was in a world a lot different to mine and under the circumstances she faced her challenges were understandable to a point. Tess reacted emotionally in huge ways to everything within her life - from deep violence back to love and stubbornness. This was definitely a story of love - love for horses and love for family and the ultimate lengths one will go to for both.
Following dreams, being crushed and coming back from the bottom - I related to this in so many ways and it made me realise I still have dreams I want to chase! The author has done a fantastic job of pulling you into the book, the surroundings, the characters and the storyline fit together just perfectly. A few "cliff hangers" as such along the way - I would love a sequel to know what/if anything happens between Tess and Tom (another jockey) and more of the future of Buffoon.
I probably wouldn't read this book again, but that's only due to the fact that I generally don't read books more than once. I will however be keeping it for when my daughters old enough to read it and sharing it with my nieces and nephews who are already old enough to enjoy this. Totally recommend this book to others and am sure you will enjoy it just as much as I have!
