Fluffy and Scruffy: A Tale of Two Kittens product reviews

From the moment I saw Fluffy and Scruffy... a Tale of Two Kitties I feel in love with it. There was nothing I didn't like about it and I was Miss 4.5's favourite bedtime story too. The cover is so inviting with the two cats snobbing each other while the mice run over them.The title is written in a font that describes the characters: Fluffy has a bow over her name while Scruffy has dirt over his name. The pun on the classic novel A Tale of Two Cities wasn't lost on me either.

The story is an age old one of neighbours that don't approve of each other's lifestyles so they ignore each other until they need to work together to outsmart the mice. Although it is about cats and mice the story could easily be about people and my daughters both commented that the cats weren't being very kind to each other. It was a good message that we all need to be reminded about.

The end pages in the book were very reflective of the book. At the start the two cats are sitting on the same brick wall as far apart from each other as possible and with their backs to each other. At the end cats are sharing the same bowl of milk and smiling together.

Miss 4.5's favourite page is right at the end where the mice are enjoying themselves in Hawaii. Each mouse is doing something different and she spends ages talking about them..This story is so well written and illustrated that I enjoy reading it over and over which is just as well as I am asked to read it at least once a day.

My two year old chose this book out of a pile of books I gave her to choose from for a story with me. The bright yellow cover and the kitties on the front at what drew her attention very quickly to this book. A great cover is the best way of attraction children to want to read a story. The fact that the book is about kitties is likely to excite most children too.

This is a story about two very different kittens who have nothing in common and are not friends. The beginning of the book shows the ways they are different. The latter part of the book shows how two very different characters can become friends, work together and also learn to appreciate each other's ways of living.

Although this book is about kitties, it could equally be about two people or groups of people. It is not until we stop and get to know each other that we can grow and make changes for the better.

The colour choices in the book are very colourful and interesting to look at. Liz Pichon is both the author and illustrator of this book and therefore I think that her illustrations have really come alive. Her words and images have come together beautifully. I love the cute and cheeky faces on the kitties. The mice in the images, although very simple in design with their spindly legs and arms, each her their own personality and stature.

The end of the story is lovely as the two kitties are very good friends. The mice, who were extremely annoying in both of the kitties, end up on island. They look very happy and contented. The lack of violence used to capture the mice by the kitties is refreshing and it also adds a little humour to the story. It goes to show that given the right situation, all living creatures can live happily, without disturbing the peace of other living beings.
