I thought that I would read this book to the kids in the house so imagine the carnage of getting six kids to sit still and listen and 3 of those boys who kept trying to act out what they could hear from the story. I liked that it was short enough to keep them hooked till the end of the book and that the kids could look at the pictures and discuss what they could see.
After the story I asked what the kids liked and they said they liked the names, one said he liked the watch that contained all the information about the beasts and one said he really liked the sleeping nets. I was kind of wondering where we as parents could get some of those nets as night times can be rather exhausting.
I liked how the kids could act out the battles and how when I asked them would they like to have the beasts in the house they felt like their opinion counted and they could tell me why they didn't want any beasts in the house and what they thought the upgrades might be. The other thing I do like about the story is that it shows them how it is best to work together.
The kids are enjoying the books so I'm looking forward to them being old enough to read it alone and not have to count on me being there to read it to them as it was a lot of stopping for them to show me how they thought the beasts would look or how they thought the weapons would manage to get the beasts or a discussion on why the boys have robot companions to help them.
I wasn't sure I would enjoy the books but I knew the boys would and I'm now hoping to find the first books in the series to see how it all started.
This is the 14th book in the Boy vs Beast series and the 2nd book involving mega-mutants. The story carries on from the last book except with a different monster to battle. This time Border Captain Kai Masters has to put together a team to defeat the ice mega-mutant. It is the job of the border guard to protect Earth from the beasts in Beastium and advance themselves gaining new upgrades and battle gear.
My son loves these books. They contain everything that he's looking for - epic battles, powerful monsters, robot companions and interesting gadgets and gizmos. The story is fast paced, action packed and exciting - it held my son's attention from beginning to end.
It's not a very long book so it doesn't take very long to read and combined with the easy to read text, it's a great book for encouraging independent reading. There are a few black and white illustrations throughout the book and an awesome graphic style section depicting part of the battle. There is some humour in it as well which just adds to the overall enjoyability and of course the good guys always win in the end but it's fun seeing how they got there.
Definitely a winning book in our house and one that we'll be reading over and over again.
