Night of the Perigee Moon product reviews

Proud to promote NZ productsCan Tilly Angelica and her magical menagerie cause enough commotion to outwit her creepy cousin and save the family manor?

All Tilly Angelica wants for her thirteenth birthday is to be normal! But with her changeover party looming and her mad, magical family gathering from near and far, Tilly is set to inherit a terrifying or tantalising talent of her own. But what if she inherits Hortense's talent of super-smelling, with an oversize nose to match?

As the enchanted Angelicas gather and Arial Manor becomes a madhouse, Tilly's troubles are tripled by her creepy cousin Prosper, and his sinister plot to bewitch the family by harnessing the powers of the Perigee Moon.

I really enjoyed this sweet little story as did my daughter aged 12. I would say as a start it would be more suitable for girls in the age 8-10 bracket as it is quite a young storyline but my daughter did still really enjoy it and it was nice light reading for her to read over a night. It is great that it is written by one of our own New Zealand authors and it is definitely worthy of the awards it has won as it is a great book for young children that is clean and fresh and full of chaos and laughter.

We meet the character Tilly Angelica who comes from a magical family all with their own talents that transpire on their thirteenth birthdays. But we soon learn that Tilly does not want a talented she just wants to be a normal girl and fears she will end up with some useless talent like an enormous nose with super smelling abilities. She hopes beyond hope that she will be normal a spark like her Dad and not inherit any talent and makes no secret of it. I thought that was quite refreshing many children would love some special ability but not Tilly she wanted to be 'normal' like any other thirteen year old girl.

Soon though Tilly's fears of her changeover are forgotten as the fate of her family and the manor they live in our under attack by her enchanter cousin Prosper. Tilly has to think and think fast to save the manor and her family and it seems her own special talent is the key to saving it. Tilly's special talent allows her to find out Prosper's plans and set up a plan to stop him in his tracks before he enchants the family and steals the manor from under their feet.

What follows is nothing short of hillarious and totally chaotic as Tilly and her young companions's set up their attack. Tilly realises she is an Angelica with a tonne of will and she is the only one who can stop Prosper. I had to laugh as she came up with a string of insults to confront prosper with, my favourite being "You belligerent fleck of llama spit" and many more that are sure to make you laugh out loud!

I totally recommend this book for young girls as it is lots of fun, it reminds me of books from my own youth before all the technology came in and kids started growing up to fast. This book is free from texting, internet, boyfriends, swearing or basically anything you don't really want your pre teens reading. A definite breath of fresh air as a book!

Product reviews for listing 829: Portrait of the Riviera -  Written by Carolyn McKenzie

Product image for Portrait of the RivieraThe Riviera is a name that conjures sparkling seas and endless sunshine: palm trees, outdoor cafes and tanning bodies on the sand. But behind the stereotype of wealth and glamour is one of Europe's most beautiful and accessible tourist locations. Take it from one who knows: while renovating her apartment in the medieval ramparts of Ventimiglia, New Zealander Carolyn McKenzie was stunned by the variety of inspiring places surrounding her.
