The Paperboy product reviews

The Paperboy takes audiences deep into the backwaters of steamy 1960's South Florida, as investigative reporter Ward Jansen (Matthew McConaughey - Killer Joe) and his partner chase a sensational, career-making story. With the help of Ward's younger brother Jack (Zac Efron - The Lucky One) and a sultry death-row groupie (Nicole Kidman - Trespass), the pair tries to prove a violent swamp-dweller was framed for the murder of a corrupt local sheriff.

I feel really bad giving a low score for this movie but I really didn't enjoy it at all. I found myself checking the run time a couple of times trying to figure out how much more of the movie I was going to have to sit through. I think the main thing that I didn't like was the time setting I am not much of a fan of movies set in times gone by preferring modern settings a lot more. I also wasn't much of a fan of some of the characters and the plot line in general.

Nicole Kidman's character Charlotte Bless really got on my nerves and I was begining to wonder if there would be a character that she wouldn't sleep with. There were parts where I felt really uncomfortable with some of her acting of highly sexed up scenes and I am not a prude or anything I just found it far too over the top. I did end up feeling sorry for Miss Bless as I think she deserved so much more than the character of Death Row inmate but she was a groupie who went out seeking a prison inmate as a husband. There were times when I felt like yelling through the TV screen for her to just be with Jack (Zac Efron) and she would of had a much better lifestyle than she ended up with.

I liked the character of Ward, I could tell very early on in the movie that he was gay which came out later in a very horrific way. This scene really troubled me and put me off watching the rest of the movie. I am not much of a fan of violence and sexual assault type scenes in movies really disturb me. I had hoped for a better ending for Ward too but unfortunately much like Miss Bless circumstances put him in a bad place. I think if it weren't for Yardley's actions in wanting to publish their article as soon as possible it would of worked out a lot differently for Charlotte Bless and Ward which would of had me enjoying the movie more but would of killed the plot I guess.

I'm going to sound like a whinging old person now but I found all the music in the movie which there was a lot of really distracting as it was really loud which kept making me want to turn the volume down on the TV but then when the talking came back on it was hard to hear the voices so I had to leave it which left me getting frustrated when the music came back on.

I wouldn't watch this movie again and normally when I get a review DVD I pass it on to family to watch after but I don't know that my family would enjoy this movie either. I wasn't a fan at all I found it quite slow and boring and the scenes that disturbed me ruined the whole experience. So I can give this movie no more than a 4/10 unfortunately.

Directed by Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman

Product image for The Extra ManLouis Ives fancies himself a young gentleman fashioned after his heroes in the books of F. Scott Fitzgerald. He dresses the part - favouring neckties, blue blazers and sport coats. But he also has a penchant for women's clothing, a weakness that leads to him losing his job as a teacher and a Princeton day school. He heads for New York City, where he rents a room in the madly discombobulated apartment of Henry Harrison, a failed but brilliant ... more...
