I *REALLY* liked this one... it was rich in flavour, had a great texture, was nice to eat as-is, and also really nice spooned on to toast-points with cheese and eaten as a snack... which I thought was great! The more versatile a dish is, the better I like it, because sometimes I just feel in the mood to eat stuff... differently.
My second-favourite meal from the entire range - my favourite not being one we got to review as it's still not fully lined-in at the supermarkets - this was a dish I could happily have eaten 2 or even 3 of in a single sitting. One of those meals that you just want to keep eating because it tastes... so... good!
The Moroccan influence made me think this may have been better targeted as a tagine rather than a hotpot, but most Kiwis wouldn't know the subtle differences, so pitching it in Kiwi parlance was a very smart move. Using Lamb was also a very smart move over beef, as the delicate flavour of the meat lends itself to the rich but not too potent flavours of the Middle-Eastern herbs and spices.
Overall, this is a meal I plan to buy more of, and have a bit of fun experimenting with. I get the feeling that there are so m any ways to serve and present this dish that will appeal to those who see the words 'gluten free' and flinch away thinking it must taste like cardboard or catfood... how wrong they are.
I have been given four different GEM heat and eat meals to review. The Moroccan Spiced Lamb was very different from all the others as they were chicken. It was great to have more choice than just chicken, chicken or chicken. Having spent some time in The Middle East I love the taste of Moroccan food so this was perfect for me.
I would say that this was the spiciest of the four GEM products. It was just right for me. The lamb was mainly in big chunks which meant one mouthful would be all lamb and the next no lamb. I didn't like the very long pieces of silver beet. I would have been happy to have it cut up a bit smaller as at times I had to twist it around my fork like spaghetti.
I really enjoyed the taste of the meal and didn't notice that it contained sultanas which I would normally pick up of dishes. I found it was the ideal size serving for my lunch. There was a bit of sauce left at the end so I could have easily stretched it to make a dinner my mopping up the sauce with some bread.
I have to say, I have previously never been a huge fan of heat-and-eat meals, but the ones from GEM have now changed that! This was the first one I tried, and is so far the best! When I looked at the box, for some reason I didn't notice the words "Moroccan" or "spiced", so it took me by surprise when I had my first bite, and then felt the spice kick in! The dish was very flavourful, I'm a bit of a carnivore when it comes to food, so I was glad to see a good amount of the lamb in the meal.
It was also good to see some veges in the meal as well. The most common vegetable I found in the hotpot was some sort of leafy vegetable, which, as I found out after looking at the ingredient list, was Silver Beet! I was most surprised at how the other ingredients in this meal seemed to make that Silver Beet tasty, it really was quite shocking. The spice of the dish was mild, it wasn't to hot that it could set your mouth on fire (), but it wasn't so weak that it didn't give that "ZING" that you get while eating spicy dishes!
The meal was rather easy to make, the instructions say that it should be cooked on high for 4 minutes, then left standing for 1 minute, then heated for another minute, and then left for 1-2 minutes before serving! This on-and-off cooking method was a bit annoying, but nothing good ever comes easy, and this method produced a delicious meal that I very much enjoyed eating. The box was well done, it displayed the necessary information in a way that was not crowded, and looked good.
The box also showed a good-looking image of the meal; the food didn't look as good as the picture while in it's black tray, but the picture still holds the appeal to the eye, and makes a very good serving suggestion. I loved how there was a QR code on the back that, when you scan it, takes you to the official website, which has gluten-free recipes for you try, it really is quite good! The portion size is awesome, it made a filling meal, and is so far the tastiest of the lot!
I would seriously recommend you try this meal, it is fast, easy, and delicious, exactly what most of us want food to be! And the best part is, this meal is healthy, with no gluten, dairy, egg or soy, and is also low-fat! I hope you enjoy having this meal, I know I did!
Of the four dishes I served up to the family for dinner this flavour was the supreme winner with hubby and I and rather surprisingly was eaten and enjoyed by all three of the little misses.
This is the one dish that I found myself wondering how to make and would definitely buy to have in the freezer for myself. Hubby has already said he wants some in the freezer to take to work and to have if we are going to dinner at my mums. The taste was just delicious. Although perhaps slightly sweet that is what perhaps had the kids eating their portions. I loved that this product was so natural. The only ingredient I didn't recognise from my pantry was thickener (1442). It is a really wholesome dish with lovely bits of New Zealand Lamb in a really tasty spicy sauce with silver beet, sultanas and yummy cannellini beans. The whole texture of the dish was perfect and the gravy just divine. I mopped mine up with bread and would probably in future, if I wanted to bulk this up, serve it with mashed potatoes or rice.
I would definitely buy this again especially as the kids will eat it. This is a really healthy and cost effective alternative to takeaways and if you want a gluten, diary, egg and soy free ready made meal then this is a must try.
I had this packet for my lunch yesterday. Like the other meals in this range, it comes in an attractive box, with nice clear instructions. The ingredients are set out really clearly. It's nice to find a product that is so open about the ingredients and keeps them nice and simple and allergen free.
I generally select packet meals like this for my lunches at work, and often gravitate towards spicy ones. For that reason I was excited to try this Moroccan Spiced Lamb meal. I microwaved this and sat to eat it in the lunchroom. It was quite hot and I managed to burn myself a little on the spinach in this meal.
Once it cooled down, I could taste the spices in the sauce. It was a little hot, but not too spicy for me. I found the meal good and filling and a good serving size. Outside of just heating and eating this meal, you could be a bit more creative with this. I'm only sorry I didn't try to make something more of this myself.
This could always be paired with some rice in order to make the meal go further. You could also add more vegetables. Another thing you could try is this as a gourmet pizza sauce. I could imagine this on a nice pillowy pizza base with extra spinach and cheese or a squeeze of pesto sauce.
