Bride & Prejudice product reviews

The very British sensibilities of Jane Austen are introduced to the exotic flavors of the Bollywood musical in this romantic comedy with songs from the director of Bend It Like Beckham, Gurinder Chadha.

Lalita Bakshi is the lovely and eligible daughter of her socially ambitious mother and father. Mother and father want to be sure that Lalita, the most beautiful of their four daughters, settles down with a man worthy of her, but she has proven resistant to matchmaking, announcing that she will choose her own husband, and will choose him for love.

I went to see this on the big screen when it came out. I was excited to see it as it was a basically a mainstream release of a Bollywood style movie. It wasn't as Bollywood as I had seen before, some of those movies are quite epic and long, and don't always translate well to English. This is based on a Jane Austen novel, and had several things going for it. Firstly, it was based on one of my favourite Austen stories, secondly it was Bollywood which meant it was going to be a twist on its presentation, and thirdly it had a couple of names like Martin Henderson and Naveen Andrews.

Both of those actors I have been watching grow up in television since they were teenagers. Naveen Andrews in the Buddha of Suburbia show he starred in, and Martin Henderson in Shortland Street. Naveen Andrews is frankly quite scrummy, so I was a little saddened that he took such a backseat in this film. But I think it showcased Henderson's talent for romantic leads pretty well.

Overall I was pretty pleased with the film. You don't need to think too much about the plot. If you didn't know the book, it wouldn't have mattered. They lessen the complexity of the plot so its accessible to all. Plus its got that cultural difference to it, which was exciting and interesting to take in. I have watched it since and enjoyed it again. A bit of popcorn for the brain.

Bride and Prejudice is a Bollywood take on the famous novel Pride and Prejudice. To be completely honest, I know the basic plot of the novel, and I know there ha been many a movie and TV adaptation of it, but I have neither read nor watched the novel or adaptations as it is simply not a story that I have ever been interested in.

When I saw the trailers for this I wanted to watch it, more because of the director Gurinder Chadha (I had studied her movie Bend it Like Beckham at school and really enjoyed it), plus it looked like a fun and vibrant film. I really enjoyed this movie and found myself wanting to watch it again not long after I went to see it.

There are some great songs in this movie, a good mix, my favourite being "No Life, Without Wife" and no having just written the title I have it stuck in my head. There's a good mixture of song types and ones that were wonderfully written so that I really do enjoy watching this film over and over again.

David Burke (Jason Sudeikis) is a small-time pot dealer whose clientèle includes chefs and soccer mums, but no kids-after all, he has his scruples. So what could go wrong? Plenty. Preferring to keep a low profile for obvious reasons, he learns the hard way that no good deed goes unpunished when he tries to help out some local teens and winds up getting jumped by a trio of gutter punks. ... more...
